I've managed to wean myself from diet coke but I still need something diet and bubbly in the afternoon (sprite, rootbeer, orange). Sarah |

Elite 2468 Racine, WI | Subject: RE: Coffee?? I am a coffee junkie. I drink 2-3 large cups in the morning, about 2/3 of a pot. Then usually iced coffee or an espresso drink of some kind in the afternoon. sometimes 2. If for some reason I can't have my coffee I bust out the diet Mt. Dew. I look at it this way... At age 28 I was smoking 2 packs a day, living on junk food especially fast food, and I couldn't pass the Navy PRT (1.5 mile run in 16:00 minutes, I couldn't do it.) I have no idea what my bodyfat was but I NEVER exercised and I weighed about 20 lb more than I do today. Now I'm 35, I don't touch fast food, try to have moderation with chips and sweets, exercise daily, a 1.5 mile run is too short to even bother with, tossed the smokes years ago, and stay at about 18% bodyfat. NO ONE, AND I MEAN NO ONE, CAN CONVINCE ME TO GIVE UP MY CAFFEINE. IT'S MY LAST BAD HABIT AND I'M KEEPING IT! Edited by CindyK 2005-06-16 10:32 AM |

Elite Veteran 777 flatland | Subject: RE: Morning Coffee?? Easy there Cindy...easy...back away slowly to your coffee pot...smell the lovely caffeine brewing...mmmmmm...... I have about 12oz in the mornings, and on days like today where I am now on my 4th day of not enough sleep, I have more (but not too much, it makes me kinda twitchy and sick sometimes). I love the smell of coffee...I grew up on Cafe Au Lait and coffee with chicory. I always confuse the Starbucks people by ordering Cafe Au Lait (I mean, how hard is it). Just thinking about coffee is waking me up some. Thanks guys. |

IT'S MY LAST BAD HABIT AND I'M KEEPING IT! Hi, my name is Gwendal and I am a caffeine addict. I try to manage my caffeine dosage pretty carefully through the day. When asked if I'm on any drugs I always reply "caffeine." People think I'm joking when I say this, but here's the truth: I have about 150-200 mg of caffeine (in coffee) in the morning, and another 100-150 mg of caffeine before 4 pm. I either get it in the form of a cup of coffee or in chocolate covered esspresso beans (now THERE's a substitute for crack) or... I cut up no-doz tablets with a pill cutter. I seriously cut up no-doz tablets with a pill cutter. I'll take my prize now, thank you. Gwendal Edited by Gwendal 2005-06-16 10:47 AM |

Actually, I prefer to get through the morning rush of getting the kids on the bus to schhol, and then do a run which ends at the coffee shop, get my Medium French Vanilla with Low Fat Milk, and then walk home. That is heaven. I feel like I earned my coffee! My classic story is about trying to get pregnant years ago. I gave up caffeine and junk food in attempt to increase my fertility. It didn't matter 'cause I was so cranky my poor husband couldn't get near me! |

They do bad bad things to my ulcers so I haven't bought any for a while...but since i live right around the block from the world's GREATEST coffee shop (Wilson's on Washington Ave in West Racine if anyone is ever here). They sell both dark and milk chocolate varieties. Time to go for a walk I think...mmmm... Gwendal, WHY do you cut up the no-doz? Why not just pop them? (um, well, like some of us do...) |

Expert 1166 Colchester, CT | Subject: RE: Morning Coffee?? Count me in, one large coffee, black every morning. Sometimes that's the only thing in me when I work out. I didn't think I wsa addicted to coffee, but this past weekend changed my mind. ON sunday I went out early for a 3 hour ride and a 45 min run right after. Basically had a quick breakfast before I left, but no coffee. After I got home and showered, I noticed I had the worst splitting headache. Figured it was from the workout, since it was so hot out, and I probably got a little dehydrated. So after downing a bunch of fluids I stil had the headache. Finally I realized, I never had coffee that morning. As soon as I brewed a cup and had about a 1/4 of it, the headache was completely gone. Chris |

Extreme Veteran 456 Western Massachusetts | Subject: RE: Coffee?? CindyK - 2005-06-16 12:07 PM Gwendal, WHY do you cut up the no-doz? Why not just pop them? (um, well, like some of us do...) One tablet is 200 mg of caffeine and I tend to have them in the afternoon when I'm trying to get max of 150 mg of caffeine. Too much and I get insomnia. Not enough and I'm dragging through the evening chores. A single cup of coffee has about 100 mg of caffeine so I might have a cup of coffee OR half a no-doz tablet, depending on availability. In the bad old days I used to devour junk food late in the afternoon to keep my blood sugar up and give me energy for the rest of the evening. Now I know to plan a healthy snack for then. A favorite 3 pm snack is to have cold coffee with a Myoplex Lite Cappacino packet mixed in for a caffeine/protein-shake combo that keeps my energy level up all evening. I don't think what's weird about me is the amount of caffeine I consume, but rather the deliberate way I manage my dosage throughout the day. I also carry splenda packets in my wallet. But that's another thread. Gwendal |

Extreme Veteran 461 Northeast Ohio | Subject: RE: Morning Coffee?? Must have it! I drink at least 2 HUGE cups every morning. I guess I'm a high-maintenance coffee drinker. I like to brew French roast really strong and then heat up about 5 ounces of skim milk in the microwave. This is how I know if I'm really friends with someone: when they ask how I take my coffee- I know they're not on my real friend list if I say, "oh, I just take it black"- but if they really are a friend I first ask if they have skim milk, would they mind if I heat it. I don't understand my aversion to milk fat in my coffee- I love the richest ice cream I can find, but anything heavier than skim milk in my coffee makes it taste like there's butter floating in it. Hey, that's not a bad idea...mind if I steal it? A favorite 3 pm snack is to have cold coffee with a Myoplex Lite Cappacino packet mixed in for a caffeine/protein-shake combo that keeps my energy level up all evening. I used to do the same thing...these days I stick with straight vanilla or chocolate Designer Whey. Which also goes well with coffee and ice I don't think what's weird about me is the amount of caffeine I consume, but rather the deliberate way I manage my dosage throughout the day. If you're weird then we both are. I don't track actual mg but I've been known to walk into Wilson's and order "Double latte, with 1 shot of decaf since I had a cup already this afternoon" I also carry splenda packets in my wallet. But that's another thread. I carry them in the little pocket of purse (which is the size of a wallet anyhow). Ithink we are sisters... Edited by CindyK 2005-06-16 11:43 AM |

Expert 680 NC Illinois | Subject: RE: Morning Coffee?? I'm not a coffee drinker, but my wife is. It is amazing how coffee can change one's disposition. Actually, it's scary. Two things stand out to me about coffee .... [1] "Coffee" drinkers really seem to be folks that really like "hot sugar milk" with a splash of coffee flavoring. I know maybe, 3 people, that drink coffee black or with minimal sugar. [2] Caffeine is a legit PED (performance-enhancing drug). It helps alertness, heart rate, etc. I find it ironic that many folks oppossed to the PED's they don't use, admit to being "addicted" or "unable to function" without coffee (caffeine). Not that it is in the same class as some other PEDs, but shouldn't it be a "red flag" to be so casual about not being able to function without an addictive PED? |

Extreme Veteran 348 Honolulu, HI | Subject: RE: Morning Coffee?? coffee is without a doubt an addictive drug. just like nicotine and alcohol, this one happens to be socially acceptable (and thank GOD for that!!) i need it to wake up - not to perform athletically. on a race morning i would drink the same amount as i normally do just to prevent drowning in the swim! Veteran 258 Plainfield, IL | Subject: RE: Morning Coffee?? Guilty here too. I have to have at least one cup of coffee day, or I get these really bad headaches by early afternoon if I miss it in the morning. I try to limit it to one 12 oz cup each morning. And no sugar or sugar like stuff in mine, I like mine straight up with a splash of cream (splash, not 1/2 cup full). *sigh* is it that bad to have one little indulgance every day? I gave up my glass of wine a night, so this does not seem so bad. |

Drink you cup, and enjoy (and have that glass of wine now and then too). |
