TBZ got me thinking about this.  I know it is debated in my family, dressing with or without oysters?

Cornbread and sausage. Mmmmm.

I like fresh oysters on the half-shell and oyster shooters, but keep them out of my stuffing/dressing.

Dressing with oysters?  After 33 years, I'm lucky that I don't mind dressing with my wife.  I used to warn her to close her eyes during the scary parts.

I've never heard of oysters in dressing. I thought cranberries and walnuts was the way to go... are you kidding me? Oysters? YUCK.

Me either... I like both..but never thought about putting them together. I might have to try that.

I love putting the oysters on the grill...until they start to open.... then throw some hot sauce on them...mmm.

I guess from reading the responses that dressing is another word for stuffing.  Where are you from?  Is that a regional thing?  Also when did oysters become part of the Thanksgiving tradition?  I thought we were supposed to eat turkey.

I am sooooo confused!

If you've never had oyster dressing (stuffing) you've no idea what you are missing. It may not sound good if you've never had it, but it is absolutely incredible. I love all sorts of dressings, but oyster is better than them all!

Oh, and our recipe comes out green -- not because of the oysters but because of the chopped celery leaves.

Mmmmmmmmm I can't wait.

I make both.  My Nana always made both, so I carry on the tradition.  Personally I like oyster dressing better, but I also make one with sauted onions, apples, and sausage.

I miss a lot of food, but there's not much I actually feel sad about missing.  Stuffing at Thanksgiving is one of them.

oh and IN THE BIRD stuffing rules ANY day over dressing from a casarole dish..

Oh no you di'n't.

Stuffing acts like a big ol' Salmonella sponge. If you don't cook it enough, it'll kill your guests. And the only way to cook it enough is by overcooking the bird. So if you stuff the bird, you either get dead guests or a dry bird. And nobody wants either of those things.

Stuffing is in the bird (read other post...bad idea). Dressing is cooked on the side. Oysters are a regional thing. I think the New Englanders (or something) fancy them.

I don't know about New Englanders, but in the midwest we eat it up (at least at my house)!

Maybe you just don't know her guests....

I dunno.  We've eaten it that way for a long time.  I guess we've just been lucky.

Ok, thanks this helps with the dressing vs. stuffing.  I am a dressing guy myself.

And, I don't think oysters are a New England thing as that's where I grew up.  I will blame it on credit it to the MidWest.

They may use a different kind of oyster...
