Well this is my first post ever as I just joined BT and it's fantastic!

Anyways, for anyone living in downtown Chicago, do you swim in Lake Michigan to train? The NOAA finally put the shoreline temperature at 60 degrees (the past couple days have been below 60), which I think is a tad cold. I trained in the lake last year to prep for a couple triathlons, but I don't remember the water being this cold? I do have a (sleveless) wetsuit, but I was just curious. Has anyone bit the bullet and ventured in yet?

Welcome to BT!

This my first year training, and I'd never done an open water swim before last week.  So yes, I think the water is really really cold.  But theres no way for the water to warm up if the weather stays cold like it is now.  I wore a sleeveless wetsuit, and my arms and body were fine, but the cold on my face and head was just too much.  I don't have a swim cap, but I'm thinking about breaking down and buying a warm cap for my race this weekend in Batavia.

Usually by now it's much warmer. They put out the red buoys which indicate 1/2 mile and one mile distances from teh shore at Ohio Street beach. We should rally a BT group swim there on, say, Wednesday or Thursday nights or weekend days when the water warms up.

For those of us that don't live downtown, is there parking around there?  Does anyone swim at one of the other beaches that has better parking?

I'd like to swim in the lake this summer (never have before.) There are some Fleet Feet clinics held a few times during the summer. I'd be interested in going if people want to meet up at other times.

Some kind of group swim in the afternoon would be great.  I know Steve Hernan from openwaterchicago.com is doing a demonstration on June 24 at Ladder 1, so if you can wait til then, it would probably be helpful to hear from someone with a lot of experience.  I know his group is out there Saturday mornings for sure, but since thats when my group ride is, I havent been able to make it out there with him yet.

Edited, cuz yes, I put the wrong date the first time.  all fixed.

Mck - Do you mean this on 6/24? Perhaps Steve is doing two days of clinics.   http://www.meetup.com/chicagotriathletesunite/calendar/10615747/?a=cv1c_grp

I would like to take a dip in that water but without a full body suit, I would freeze right now. Weather's been whaky this year. Hopefully were due some heat in the later part of June/july to warm it up a bit.

I would love to join you all in an OWS downtown.

However, I live in the northern 'burbs. Does anyone train up here in the lake? I don't know which beaches allow swimming out past the buoys. It would just be so much easier to pop over to a beach than it would be for me to drive all the way downtown.

Would love to hear if any of you have swam up here.

I'd like to join in, too!  I can't do weekday evenings (work), but I could do a weekend morning or afternoon...I would just have to give up my long ride, but I'm cool with that as long as I know in advance.  Keep me posted on when you all plan on meeting up.  Thanks!

Anybody wanna go this Sunday? Sometime mid-morning perhaps, and then grab food? I'll be coming off the Horribly Hilly Hundred and think a dip would do me good. Plus it's supposed to be warm and sunny so maybe there'll be hotties out there.

Have a good swim out there buddy...and no "near drowning" incidents, please!

Went for my first OWS last night at the first ladder (just south of Castaways). Went in with my full suit but you didn't need it. Felt great.

This Saturday it is supposed to be 94 and humid.  Sounds like a great day for open water swimming to me.  I'll be at the Ohio Street Beach swimming.  Feel free to say hi, I'm 6'3 and have an Orca Sleeveless.

I'm going tonight (Thursday, July 2) at about 530 if anybody wants to join me. Plan calls for a 45 minute swim but I'm just going to go a mile, so prolly closer to 30 minutes. OK 35. Blue bike, blue helmet, sleeveless wetsuit.
