Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 7 A.M. and made sausage and pancakes for the family. Packed the car with road bike and MTN bike. Did not know which one to use until I got to the race site. Met Brett and Cathy, other BT'ers.
Event warmup:

Ran a little bit and set up Transition.
Run
  • 13m
  • 2 miles
  • 06m 30s  min/mile
Comments:

The first run segment was good. I started out quickly behind a super fast guy. Did not stay with him long. Slowed a bit and caught my breathe. Another guy caught me about 1 1/2 miles into it. I knew I would catch him on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 1
  • 00m 40s
Comments:

Seemed good. This is an estimate, for there were no splits. A bit icy in transition. I took off my vest and hat, for I was hot now! My glasses fogged up immediately. I couldn't see very well. Unfog after I started the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 32m
  • 10.7 miles
  • 20.06 mile/hr
Comments:

The first bike segment my legs felt like leg weights. The hils were killing me. I could not keep my normal pace on the hills that I train on. Second segment felt better. I was able to push a little harder on the second loop of the second segment.
What would you do differently?:

Warm up on the bike. I did not get out on it.
Transition 2
  • 00m 40s
Comments:

Same as T1 seemed good, but I didn't have splits.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 13m
  • 2 miles
  • 06m 30s  min/mile
Comments:

Second run seemed slower. However I did pass 2 people from the first wave. But some guy came flying by me from the wave behind me. Hard to run in the snow and very hilly.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Post race
Warm down:

Cheered on some friends, got some ramen noodles and walked around. I brought some coffee so I drank that.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not enough time on the bike and speed work on the run. It was also very cold.

Event comments:

This is a fun, low stress race in the Colorado Winter. It is packed with fast people and recreationals alike. Nice to meet other BT'ers.

Awesome race Mark! You kicked butt! Thanks for cheering me on - that was very cool. Interesting race in those super cold temps AND no sun! Not to mention dodging the ice and snow! Great job!
