Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I am surprised that this thread has not taken off. I remember a recent thread about blowing off steam because of bad roads morphing into a thread on bike advocacy. I also remember the hoopala that went on during the time they were trying to ban bikes on columns drive. If this is the guy that was behind all of that, I am surprised that the biking community has not gotten behind his opponent to throw him out and let other politicians know that cyclist are becoming a constituency that needs to be considered when making decisions. Although I live in Cherokee, I would like to see if there is anything that I could do to get rid of politicians that believe bikes should be on the sidewalks. I would think that at least the bike shops in Cobb would want to try and get people involved in this. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Here is Bob Ott's website http://www.bob4cobb.com/. I really just wanted to bring Dan's post back to the top. It really annoyed me that Commissioner Joe Thompson wanted to ban cyclists from columns drive. As a part of the local biking community, I would like to see as many bike friendly people in local offices as possible as long as I agree with their other convictions. Unfortunately, I live in Cherokee and can not vote there. Edited by nealphelps 2008-08-01 11:05 AM |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I had lunch with Bob Ott last week. He's a great guy. Not only is he pro-bike but he's ANTI-build. he thinks Smyrna/Vinings,etc. is getting way too overbuilt and he hasn't taken any $ from commercialreal estate builders during his campaign. BUT whoever said this "Commissioner Joe Thompson wanted to ban cyclists from Columns Drive" is misinformed. He is a publily elected official and the tax payers who voted for him, and who he owes his allegiance, kindly ASKED him to ban cyclists fro mtheir neighborhood. They were 100% right. People were and still are driving from all over to ride on Columns drive. it is unsafe and unfair. Ride i nyour owndamn neighborhood. As a property owner in Cobb County I would be FURIOUS if that sort of behavior went on in my neighborhood. Cyclists were picking fights, keying cars, cussing at homeowners and drivers who lived there, leaving trash, and acting like entitled . on top of that it was LAME as hel lto ride there. it was like ameat market and cruising area for douch bags to show off. I went there twice and you couldn't even get in good rides because of all the poseurs. I am a triathlete. I love top bike. But NONE of you would want that going on in your front yard, around your EXPENSIVE house. Vote for bob ott because he is a great guy, and not an old dinosaur like Thompson, and ebcause Ott will eas congestion and stop construction - not because you think Thompson is a bike nazi. |

There is a park at both ends of Columns Drive, you don't expect traffic??? Give me a break. I think I would rather have cyclists rather than cars whizzing down my street. I live on Peachtree Battle and I see more bikes on my road in a day than Columns sees in a month. I would not lobby to have it stopped, even if I hated cyclists, because it is a public road, not a private driveway. Columns is a great road for cyclists, triathletes, etc. to do heart rate tests, LT tests etc, because it is flat, decent in length and without stops. I guess I am an exception to your broad generalization about having bikes in my neighborhood and I think you might find that most everyone else here would be as well. But I only speak for myself and I don't live in Cobb. If the homeowners decide to purchase Columns Drive and privatize the road and the parking lot of the National Park, then they can do whatever they want, but until then, they should share the road. If that means voting for someone that would support equal access to the road instead of supporting someone that doesn't then I think it is the right thing to do of those in Cobb (maybe they can get evil bikers off of the Silver Comet Trail as well).

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() What I would give to see cyclist and runners going down my street daily. To me, that's just indicative of an advanced and open society. Instead I get cars.. what a massive improvement THAT is. (sarcasm) Also.. JBD.. thanks for not kicking me off Peachtree Battle. I love running on that street. It's a pretty incredible area. Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My parents live on the tip top of Manor Ridge. I live in Cobb County. This would make JBD and my parents neighbors if he really lives on Peachtree Battle Ave.. When I visit there is NOTHING I like more than walking down the hill and taking a little 2 mile jog around Memorial Park and then sprinting my way back up the hill when it's all over. What I don't like and what the neighborhood associaiton (that JBD is a member of) doesn't like is gawkers and people driving around to point at a $2,000,000 house. It is why the associaition pays for off duty cops to patrol after hours and for an on-duty cop to ticket and harass people twice a month for "cruising" or "cutting through" the neighborhood. Don't you think it's hypocritical to keep people out of your neighborhood and then go bother the people at Columns? The fact of the matter is that the bikers were adversarial at Columns. There were reports of assault/vandalism (read the articles and blogs and message boards) foul language, excessive trash, damage to landscaping and just real nasty behavior. Call me all the names you want but part of a neighborhood's charm is low traffic flow and peace of mind. IF I paid a lot of money for a Columns Drive house I would be annoyed at all the non-residnet bikers treating my 'hood with disrespect and being a nuisance. Sorry. And there are on-line petitions and public meetings that have tried to get biking banned or leashed on portions of Silver Comet Trail. Just because I agree doesn't make me a jerk . I'm not the only one with these feelings. The Silver Comet Trail is a GREAT concept. but when kids, pets and families have to take a back seat to RUDE bikers and recumbants there is a problem. There are a lot more parents and kids that use the trail than bikers. I do not see a problem with taking the bikes out of the city limits or curbing them on certain days to reduce incidents. And Neal Phelps - there is no crap in my post. Just opinion. Way to be a douche bag just because you disagree. Real mature. My dream is to one day spell as good as you do. i'm very impressed. Then when I reitterate that it is my opinion and that it isn't crap even if it is not popular here, I get crucified again. No amount of name calling by you is going to make me think it is okay for a group of bikers to invade someone's neighborhood. Sorry. I don't ride there anymore because I have self-respect and not only that but it wasn't a good ride. And Thompson is an old fossil. Ott is the better candidate. But if you think either of them or any other candidate wouldn't try to get cycling banned - given enough pressure and another round of taking $ off the table for campaigns and petitions - then you have too much faith in human kind. Some of the arguments I hear are not new. "Every time a car hits a bike it's the car's fault". "Roads were conceptualized and created for bikes" etc. I love cycling. I can't get the burn in my quads from anything else. It is a great sport. |

big john h - 2008-08-04 3:03 PM Take your own advice. I make a post that I beleive in and i get crucified for it. Then when I reitterate that it is my opinion and that it isn't crap even if it is not popular here, I get crucified again. Crucified? Hardly. You went WAY off topic with your message. Reread your first few sentences of your original post. They contradict one another. And there is plenty of crap in the rest of your post. I hardly think Neal's post was out of line with the thinking of several others on this board No amount of name calling by you is going to make me think it is okay for a group of bikers to invade someone's neighborhood. Who is name calling? You are the only one that I have seen drop the d-bag on someone. And Neal of all people. That probably cracked most of us up. (I can see Neal shaking his head) Bikers invaded a neighborhood? Again absurd. It is a PUBLIC road next to a National Park with a running, biking trail. Anyone capable of cognitive thoughts would expect traffic to be in the area.
Sorry. I don't ride there anymore because I have self-respect and not only that but it wasn't a good ride. Self-respect? WTF are you talking about. This is the kinda crap people are talking about. Who knew the where I ride had ANYTHING to do with self-respect. If you don't think it is a good ride, that is fine. No one is arguing the contrary. But will you find me a place around town where I can to 2x30' intervals in z4. I look forward to your response.
It was like being on MTV Cribs for cyclists. if you ride there i don't hate you and i won't lose a wink of sleep over it. I just don't think, personally, that it is very cool. Are you normally this insecure about things in life? Do big houses and/or fancy bikes just bother you in general? Glad that you don't lose sleep over the fact that some of us occasionally train there. I would be worried otherwise.

I hardly think Neal's post was out of line with the thinking of several others on this board. _ I do. I have NO IDEA who he is. I doubt he knows me. Might be a great guy but my post is NOT crap. It was rude for him to say it was. Bikers invaded a neighborhood? Again absurd. It is a PUBLIC road next to a National Park with a running, biking trail. _ Homeowners by Chastain Park and Tanyard Creek park have this problem too. Just because it is public doesn't mean you can drive from miles away and be a nuisance. There are raids, parking tickets, curfews, and other such implements that the city/county do for the property owners in thatcase because they agree that people game the system and take advanatge of it. I'm sure if you lived by a park you'd love to see teenager having sex, or driving through your yard or being loud or whatever. you have every right to complain. In this case there were so many complaints that the county did something about it. That should tell you something. That's like calling somneone a douche bag and saying you can do it because of "free speech" (guilty ![]() Self-respect? WTF are you talking about. This is the kinda crap people are talking about. Who knew the where I ride had ANYTHING to do with self-respect. _ The people who bought those houses were being bothered. Did you read what I wrote? They were cussed at, threatened, had their cars keyed, had their landscaping destroyed, etc. They were so annoyed they signed petitions and got bikers ticketed for "cruising". They did everything within their power to put an end to it. Why would a level headed person want to be assoiciated with THOSE type of bikers? Whay would you choose to ride amidst an ideological battle ground? You only live once. That is not for me. If someone doesn't want me in their 'hood - I'm not going just to spite them and say I have a right to be there because it is a public road. This is basic grade school playground logic. If a car is coming to run over you but it is i nthe wrong lane wil lyou move or stand your ground because you are in the right? If you don't think it is a good ride, that is fine. No one is arguing the contrary. But will you find me a place around town where I can to 2x30' intervals in z4. Are you normally this insecure about things in life? Do big houses and/or fancy bikes just bother you in general? _ I live in a big fancy house. I am a typical spoiled, elitist Westminster douche bag. I have no problem with money. I have a problem with people shwoing up at Columns because it was the "place to be" in their $4,000 bikes and brand new spandex who didn't know how to shift gears and had helmets with platinum rearview mirrors who would ride for 5 minutes and then put their bike on the rack of their porsche. It was poseur central - for the most part - and I felt like there were a lot of judgeing going on and people peacocking around. The majortoy of the people weren't that serious about biking - jsut showing off and maybe picking up a date. AGAIN just my experiences. Finally...you are a bit back on topic. If you think Ott is the better candidate, fine. Make your case why and be done with it. IMO, you should have left it there. _ Again, Bob is great. He will probably win. Just don't vote for him as the hero of the bike. Hell, if you are in commercial or residential real estate you SHOULDN'T probably vite for him because he wants to stop expansion and building and even raise permit fees on renovation. He's anit-build. I can just see a realestate forum saying "Vote for Thompson. Ott is a real estate nazi" - in raltion to the "Vote for Ott. Thompson is a bike nazi." sentiment over here. |

But if someone was cruising the street, keeping to themselves...and they have a LEGAL right to do so...then I don't have a problem with it. In general, cyclists aren't being a nuisance. As for your accusations that it was cyclists doing the damage v. the general public keying cars or vandalizing property on Columns Dr, do you have proof of this? Or did you just read it on the internet? |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ok...perhaps I can bring this back full circle a bit. Not attempting to jump on. I am "newish" to the area training wise and came on the back end of the Columns drive stuff, so I'd venture to say I am not biased. When I go to Columns drive, I found it a great place to get in Z4 work (inside the city). There is no where else that I have found, other than my trainer, where I can get such a workout in within the constraints of a work week. For me, the weekends are reserved for long Z2/3 rides. The short stuff has to happen during the week where traveling outside the city is not an option for me. Correct me if I am wrong, but if I am not parked illegally, being overly loud or breaking any other law, I can be around any public neighborhood and not risk being pulled over by a cop real or rental. This is the case with the houses at Columns drive. If I want to stand outside of a $5 million house and gawk, I can do that legally last time I checked. But for me, it’s hard to do that going 23+ mph. But FOR ME, I have noticed a lot of people riding their Zipps and full gear out on Columns from time to time. But I also see the people riding their beach cruisers. But then again, that short workout could have been to test out their race gear and not risk damage (see my rant on cracking my disc on Silk Sheets). OR, they could be people out there just wanting to be seen. Either way, I don’t care. I'll pass them (or get passed by them) without batting an eye. Just because you're rich and live in a fancy house does not mean you own the entire area you live in. If tax dollars go to pave the road in front of the mansion, I can ride in front of it just as I can the shanty with the pot hole in front of it. That's just my logic. And for the record, I completely agree with you that pretty much any politician will go with whom ever is the loudest. And fortunately, the "this is my street because I live here" crowd was not the loudest or else there would be no riding or running on Columns drive. And I also am ashamed when I hear about a stupid cyclist doing something stupid. I chalk it up to the person being stupid. Just like when I hear about a driver being stupid, that doesn't mean I don't want to be known as a driver or anything else for that matter. Just my 2 cents.
