Subject: Is 12 years old too young to train for a 1/2 mary?

My daughter, who is pretty athletic and wants to work out with me, has asked if she can train for the White Rock 1/2 Mary with me.  I have a couple conservative run/walk training plans that I think would fit well with her ability and interest, as the volume does not pick up too quickly.

I was thinking we would start a training plan and follow it for a couple weeks and see how it goes, and if she likes it and wants to keep going, we'll do it for fun and see how it pans out...no pressure and no time goals.

For you more experienced runners, does this sound workable, or is a middle schooler too young to be training for this distance?  She is in middle school athletics, loves to run, and has done a 5k with me with no problems.

There are a growing number of docs and Pediatricians who think this is not such a good idea.  I am not gonna try and argue their point mostly because I am not a doc and have no business do so.

I might suggest that before you head down that road, go look up the research (and Opinions) and arm yourself with the facts and potential risks.

I might also suggest that you do what is prudent for anyone heading into the world of Endurance Sports. Have a chat with your doc and get a checkup before starting out. This will give you an opportunity to chat with a doc and ask questions about the risks

Good luck and I think it's great that your supporting your DD with her athletic ambitions

I would definitely talk to her doctor about it. I, personally, feel that is too young of an age. And young women in particular are more prone to injuries than boys. The changing female body does not hold up well to the rigors of endurance or other hard-core sports training. I can't tell you how many of my female friends had to have surgery from sports injuries between 13 and 15 years old....

My answer?  Yes, too young.

Even Daniels (one of the premier running coaches out there) does not like to subject young athletes to anything more strenuous than 5 - 10k ..... all the way up through college.  He prefers to focus them on shorter/faster stuff.

Especially since it is a daughter.  You can seriously mess up their puberty issues by subjecting them to that level of running stress.

But then again, I'm no coach ................ yet .........

Thanks for the input; this is why I asked.  I know she is capable of going out and doing the training, especially with a conservative plan, but I don't want to risk any unnecessary injury or other issues.

There was an 11 year old at my race today (500 yard swim, 17 mile bike, 5k run) who I have seen at a previous race of the same distance and a bike TT before. And he has a nicer bike than I.

I don't know the answer; just thought I'd throw that out there.

i say talk to the pediatrician.  they know your daughter's history and can give you a good honest answer.  personally, i don't see the problem if it's a conservative run/walk program.  i think there is a difference between training to race/win a 1/2 mary and training to complete a 1/2 mary.  it sounds like her plan would be to complete, not race.  to me that would seem to make a huge difference.

It would ABSOLUTELY be a plan to complete it, with me, doing a run walk (probably 4:1); she would not be racing it by any stretch of the imagination.

I would talk to a dr first.  I did a race a few years ago and there was a family with dad and 3 kids I think 7, 8 and 11 doing the HIM.  They finished around 2:20 and when I looked the previous year they ran in under 2:40 I think. Not saying it won't cause some form of long term damage but they can definatley finish by 11.

I may not be a doc. But I say let her do it.

Talk to her doc of course, but if she loves to run encourage it. Just do the "talk" after ever training day i.e. how you feeling, anything hurting, lets stretch etc.

I say do it and mom and daughter should have fun together. As long as she's not full out racing the darn thing than go for it.

IMO, most 12 year olds could train to complete a half marathon but I don't think it is the best way for someone of that age to be involved in running.

I believe that the primary goal when working with young athletes is to promote a life-long involvement in sport and in my experience, having a young athlete run a few times a week for 20-60' is more likely to see them continue with running as opposed to trying to have them follow a fully regimented training program.

For those athletes that are ready for a regimented training program at that age, they will more than likely be better served by building their speed over shorter distances (800, 1000, 1500, mile).  The speed that they build over the shorter distances will serve them well as they get older and step up to longer events.

I'm so sorry. That was my mistake. Dad and daughter should definetly have fun.

I just moved from california to georgia not too long ago (9 months) and there were kids your daughters age and teenagers regularly running the la marathon. It was no big thing and EVERY year there was a special on those kids in a particular running group.

I still say go for it.

id say just let her be herself....athletic and active, never bother putting forward a training plan.... just let her wake up and do something new every day.

I'll just chime in to say that my husband is a Doc and does not want my son, 12 also, running anymore than 5 or 10k at this point.

I often bemoan the fact that I only starting running at age 43 and many of my training buddies respond with "at least you have fresh joints!". I have many friends who experienced injury at a young age and are limited now in what they can do....but of course everyones situation is different.

Fantastic that your daughter is athletic and fit...her Dad has obviously set a great example!

I think she should do it. You said you would be doing a run/walk format which will take some of the strain off of a total 13.1 mile run. I live outside Philadelphia and regularly participate in the running events in the city. Philadelphia schools promote "Students Run, Philly Style", a program to get inner city kids more active. The goal is to finish the longer endurance events in the city.

I think it is great that you are supporting your daughter in being more active. In 2 weeks I will be running the Philadelphia Distance Run (a half marathon) with my Dad for the fifth straight year. Now, I am 29, not 12, but I must say that it is so much fun to be out there with my Dad. We just go out a have a good time.

You might want to check out some of the studies that have been done on puberty-aged girls in sports.  It's a little frightening.  Some of these girls have long term damage from doing too much training.  Definitely talk to her doctor and do some research before making the decision.

The book I'm thinking about is called "Warrior Girls: Protecting our Daughters Against the Injury Epidemic in Women's Sports"

Our oldest was twelve when he did his first, he's done maybe three or four more since then. No ill effects, but then he's not training at 30-40+ mpw, nor is he running the whole thing.

My son did his first 5 mile race when he was 10, last April (at age 12) he did a formula one style duathlon, total time was 2 1/2 hours. My daughter has been running since she was 12, now runs cross country and track in High School, she is joining the swim club so she can do triathlons next summer. We were just at a CC meet this Saturday and there was a middle school division, but only 2 miles. but some of these kids show up at the local 10k races. I understand the bond that comes from training with the kids. I never pushed a hard work out on them, we ran at their pace, walked whenever they wanted, and cut the runs short if they were too tired. Now, I can't even come close to my daughter's times. If you are going to talk with a doctor, make sure he or she is a runner also.

I ran middle distance freshman year in high school. Our longest days were 11 - 14 miles, 3 mile warm up + 8 - 11 mile run 2x/month. I was 14, and it was tough. My coach told us that if we ran any outside races longer than 10k we wold be off the team as long as he was the coach. We were told our bodies were not ready for racing the longer distances.

certainly consult your physician, and maybe a sports dr., too.

can they do it and finish? sure I lost to a 8 year old in a 8 hour race. he did 33 miles and I did 32 miles.

Is it a good thing? I am not sure about that. I heard you can potentially screw up there growth.

x100.

The reason our kids are getting walloped in pre-puberty and puberty is because they are pushed too hard. Have you SEEN those kids out on the soccer field? Have you been one of them? I promise, "taking it easy" is NOT in the vocabulary, except perhaps a light-ish day before or after a game. Kids are run far too hard, far too long, in high-impact, joint-destroying sports. Even more importantly, they are not given the option to stop when they need to, or take a break, or a day off. Heck, we weren't even allowed water breaks when we needed them, only when the coach (who was standing still or barely walking) decided we had worked hard enough for one.

Consult a sports med doctor and discuss exactly what you want to do. Take the plan(s) in that you are considering. Then, ask that the doctor talk with your daughter privately without you there (though a good doc will ask for that before you offer). Have the doc talk to both of you about how to evaluate her condition, how to ease up or push on, what are early warning signs of an oncoming injury, when do the blahs mean stop and when do they mean plug on, etc. Over-exaggerate the 10% rule, perhaps even cutting it to 5% or less. Again, make sure this is a SPORTS MED DOC, though talking with her pediatrician to get background in when you get the referral might not be a bad idea.

Finally, go out there and have fun with your daughter. If the doc clears her, work your way toward the half-mary. If you make it, fantastic! If not, fantastic! - you still got lots of bonding time with your daughter, and taught her that sports don't have to hurt, and that you can approach sports casually and still have fun - and that her dad will still be just as proud of her and brag just as loudly to all his co-workers.

And neither is "he" a "she."  Hate to be gender biased, but there are more issues with training that early for young women than young men.
