I usually have a bottle of single malt on hand for the occasional nip and just finished my bottle of Ledaig last night.  I am "working around the isle" and have tried many different scotches.  Anyone have a favorite they'd like to recommend to me?

I've had the Double Wood and love it!  The Port wood is good too, but even more $$$.

Talisker is a solid standby.

Had a Lagavulin on Sunday and really enjoyed it.

I'm partial to the peat of the Islay distilleries myself.

Many good ones listed so far. I would add:

Glendronach

Glenfarclas

I'm not a big fan of Ledaig.  Lagavulin and Talisker are two of my favorites.  I shy away from whisky aged in sherry casks as they are usually too sweet for me.

I also suggest picking up a good book on different whisky tasting profiles.  Finding out what you like will help you find which new bottles to try.

Auchentoshen (sp?)
Balvenie Doublewood = great
Laphroig
Glennfiddich 15yo (the 12 is lacking in comparison)
Lagavulin

Noticed a Japanese single malt last night. Was curious, but with a basket full of wine, didn't have the budget

I have had Lagavulin many times and it is one of my favorites.  Great with a cigar around a firepit!

Have tried and liked most of the ones listed so far except Laphroig - not my style I guess.  I will give props to Cardhu, a Speyside, and one of my favorites over the years.

Never heard of Auchentoshan though, so may have to give that one a try.  Googled it - it is a Lowland Scotch - one of only 3 left in that area along with Glenkinchie (which I liked) and Bladnoch, which I've never tried.

I guess I am easily pleased with Chivas Regal. A lot of solid other suggestions made @ much higher prices, but when consumed on regular basis, this is my stand bye Scotch...

When possible, buy at the duty free. I had bought Balvenie at the LLS at $55. It was $30CDN at the duty free on I-87 at the US/Canada border. The Glenlivet 16yo was also $30CDN which is ~$27USD.

Definitely a good way to get a good deal, but selection can be very limited.

The Ledaig was ok.  I only tried is as we stayed for 2 nights on the isle of Mull and that is where Ledaig is distilled.  They use the old Tobermory distillery and I still have the Tobermory scotch mini (empty now!) that was sitting on the nightstand in our room at the local B&B.   10 days in Scotland - best trip we have ever taken!

I'm so jealous!  I've been in perpetual planning mode for a trip to Scotland but keep putting it off.  My wife says this year she'd be willing to go, so I'm getting excited about the idea.  Glad to hear you had fun!

This is true. The bigger airports in Europe have a better selection. Heathrow and Schipol were both good.

BTW: Buy in the last country before you come to the US. Schipol gave me a hard time about security and liquid limits b/c a bottle I bought in the UK. Even though it was security sealed, it wasn't Dutch security. I managed to check a bag at the gate and could get it home as checked baggage, but not carry on.

Damn terrorists win again

Lagavulin is hands down my favorite scotch, but it's a pretty hefty price tag. If you're not looking for an Islay, give Aberlour 12 or 16 a try. It's a Speyside and can't be beat for the price -- it's on par with The Macallan I'd say.

trotpntbll - 2010-02-16 3:20 PM Although it's not a true Scotch, but a blend, I LOVE Chivas Regal's 18 year....

For a single malt I'm a sucker for 18 year Glenfiddich

Both are about $60 a bottle where I am but for how little I drink, well worth the cash.

Blends are still Scotch, and some are very good!
