Race is in 2 months, time to get this thread started.

Who's doing it? Have you done it before?

Hey there,

I'm in for this race. This will be my first HIM.  I did hear a rumor that the run may be changed to skip College Hill and maybe head through the India Point section of Providence instead.  Anyone know if there is any truth to this rumor?

I heard the run was changed as well not by any official communication but from someone doing the race.

I'm thinking about doing it.  Haven't registered though.  I'm on the fence.  I'm not sure I'll have my bike where I want it by then.

Didn't hear about the run change - although it would be nice not to walk up that hill 2x! Still on the fence about doing it...

It would be so cool if you did it!!!

I hope you are decide yes to the race.

Main reason I'm doing it is you can sign up for IMLP '11 after the race if you participated. I'm doing my second 70.3 of the year 3 weeks before RI 70.3

I'm in as well, this'll be my first HIM too.

I went and tried out the run course when I was in Providence over the winter, I'd not be upset if that hill was removed!

It is true...the run course will be changed. I spoke to a race official last month who said that the course will be moved toward the India Point section of Providence.

That being said, doing this race for the third year. I have really enjoyed it.

Read some of the race reports from last two years of BTers who did the race and also find last year's thread for the race. Dreamchaser has pretty detailed account of the course in one place. It isn't easy lots of hills in the middle.

I'm not sure if I'm doing it or not as I was diagnosed with Lyme's and how my body responds to treatment and if I can workout is sort of up in the air. Right now I'm feeling pretty fatigued and have had to cut back in my training.

Sorry to hear that Kathy.  I'm registered for RI.  Bummed about the hill being removed.  I was looking forward to bragging rights for a year.

Good luck to all doing RI!

I did it last year and really enjoyed it.

The point to point bike means that you spend the day before shuttling your stuff to different transitions, but it's really not that bad. Plus, the race seems to get better each year (it's relatively new I think) from what I've heard.

The swim was really rough -- the ocean was totally calm the day before .... storm the night before, and and the water was rough. The race started 30 min late because the officials had to drag the buoys back into place!
The bike is point-to-point rolling, but none of the hills are really that bad.
The run is two out and backs, which is nice because there are a ton of spectators. The run finishes in downtown Providence at (I think) the State House.

Well the new run course has been posted. It is not exactly a picnic either...there is still a pretty substantial hill (steeper) but not quite as long as the original course...pretty close though. I will plan on running it within the next week or so and post my thoughts. It looks like a nice blend of flat and hills with a decent amount of it within sight of the water.

Happy training folks.

Vin

Well...the run course is on par with last year's course. I ran it today with my son in the baby jogger. There is still a big hill at mile 1, just in a different location. The course is much more scenic this year and a good portion of it is within sight of the water - read: cooler. Some of it takes place on walking trails in a park. It was not bad today but it should make for a crowded course for a couple of miles on race day. When I get motivated I might write a turn by turn description.

I am not motivated right now!

Hi

So my first HIM (and tri for that matter) was in Clinton, NJ on 5/23.  Did anyone do that one and can you compare the ride / run against the RI one.  I`m a little freaked out about the "hill" chats when talking about the run.  I actually like hills on the ride cause i`m a cyclist and "enjoy" doing Bear Mountain.

When i looked at the RI course on the website i could not tell what the elevation was - the numbers are conveniently fuzzy...

Chris

So quiet in here even with the race less than a month away.  How's training going for everyone?

I'm close to registering.  Almost there...not quite over the hump though.  Need time to decide.  Any chance this race sells out?

Alright I'm in!  Wife made the call for me with a surprise father's day registration as a gift!  Good thing I haven't been slacking off too much since it's in less than a month!

Excellent gift!

Got in a really nice long ride last week to get things sorted with fit & nutrition strategery. Looking forward to the 0300 alarm clock.

I rode part of the course yesterday. Question to those who have done this before; how did you find riding on 102? There was virtually no shoulder and the cars were flying. I got buzzed by a dump truck yesterday. Otherwise it was a nice ride. The water was beautiful...flat as a pancake.

Mav, don't jinx the water!  I heard it can turn on you!   Wish I could ride the course beforehand but may have to settle for driving it...how was the quality of the road?  I know it's not hilly, but is it smooth, pot holes, pretty good overall?

I'm coming up Saturday morning and then staying in Providence. Can you drop your bike off at T1 the morning of the race or does it have to be there on Saturday?

Oh, and the run course removed the scary hill from last year but looks like it's added a different scary hill instead!
