Subject: Eating while racing

I cant seem to figure out how to stay hydrated and feeling ok. I road 70 miles last week and felt like crap from mile 40 on. I drank a mixture of Gatorade and water and ate little food. Anyone have a schedule that they recommend?

Thanks!!!

Eat sooner, more often, and more.

I like to eat every 45 minutes on the bike in small increments (for rides longer than 2 hours). I eat a few Shot Bloks at a time, or a chunk of a bar of some sort. I will switch to GU at the end of a ride as it usually sounds better than chewing.

x2 on eating more solid food on longer rides.  I routinely do 70-100 mile rides every weekend (if the weather cooperates), and I usually bring along with me a Clif bar (or 2 mini Clif bars), a pack of Clif Shot Bloks or some other gummy-type nutrition (Luna Moons, Honey Stinger Chews, Sharkies, etc), and a Peanut Butter & Honey Uncrustable.  For fluids, I usually mix up a bottle of GU20, Heed, or a blend of G2 & water...then I will refill at a gas station stop along the way, as needed.  This plan has always gotten me through longer distances, relatively well.   I typically don't use gels on rides, but that's just me.  Gels tend to work better for me, when taken before a swim workout.

G2 is Gatorade's low-cal version of the sports drink.  It's widely available just about everywhere...grocery stores, gas stations, etc.

GU is a brand of sports nutrition for athletes.  Their product line includes gels, gummie chews, and drink mixes.

I'm not a nutritionist (but I did sleep at a Hoiliday Inn)
I'll just use fluids and gels for short rides. If I'm out for awhile, I get the 'munchies' sometimes so I'll use something with a bit of protein (Hammer Perpetuim) to stave off the hunger pangs. You don't HAVE to eat real food-you body doesn't care-just get enough calories/carbs.

It might not be hydration/nutrition.  Could be fitness.
