So I've read Lynn Cox's book and now have this little voice in the back of my head telling be to take up long distance swimming...

I'm doing Big Shoulders this year - 5K - In September. I found a 5.8 miler in NYC in August that looks like fun too (maybe next year, I have a TRI that weekend) I even found a 28.5 miler swim in June (oh hell no).

I'm looking for some yardage advice on those distances..Swimming comes easy for me but I have no experience training for any distance greater than a 2.5K swim (Big Shoulders short course)

How do you train and how many yards do you put in?????

I've done up to 10K OW races on just three days a week of 4-5000 yards. Probably...definitely not ideal, but it was all the time I had to invest at the time.

I've thought about doing distance things in cycling and running......but never swimming...probably because it does not come as easy.

Definately go for it - I think it's a great idea, especially since it sounds like you enjoy it. US Masters Swimming has some stuff on long distance you might check there.

I jsut started last year, did a 1.5 miler from alcatraz and a 2 mile pier to pier.  Repeating those and more and considering a 3 miler in La Jolla.  I love OW swimming, not sure why, I used to play polo in HS and college and hated the swimming part.

This website has some good info as well http://forums.usms.org/forumdisplay.php?s=c7901d9422b965361cafeef570f73317&forumid=7&daysprune=1000&sortorder=desc&sortfield=lastpost&perpage=25&pagenumber=1, it's the USMS discussion board for open water swimming.

I'd say 4K 3/week is good for up to 3 miles.  Longer than that, you'd want more.  Just my .02

Unless you mean WATER polo, I think you were doing it wrong.  The swimming must have been hell on the horses.

Umm... most open water I've done was a 5k training session. I have done 10k workouts before, and maybe 14k days when I was crazy. Oh, I also did 85k/week training camps.

Don't swim continuously for 2 hours (well maybe once would be good). Change your paces too: If you do 300s, do something like 2@4:30, 1@4:10, 2@4:20, 1@4:00, 2@4:10, 1@3:50. Interrupt your intense training with some kick or drills, then do something endurance like to finish off. If you need ideas, check my logs from september to february.
