It's only a week away.

What are some good ideas that you've heard of for expressing your love to your sweetie?

I think one of the best that I heard was a guy who gave his wife a copy of the movie "Serendipity" (a chick flick about fate) and a copy of the book from the movie, ("Love in the Time of Cholera") and inside the book inscribed, "We were meant to be together." Wow. How romantic!

The funniest (to me) was several years ago when my ex-husband bought me a beautiful silk flower arrangement. I saw it sitting on the table and ooo'd and aah'd appropriately and told him how thoughtful he was since it was my favorite color, and then he said, "I hope you like it. It was the last thing left at the florist." At which point I busted out laughing and said, "Oh Dan! You were doing so well until you said that!" And I think that was the last time I got flowers for Valentines Day! ha!

This crap is starting already?

Its commercialized and overrated. And no, I'm not bitter. I'd rather flowers or gifts (anyone want to buy me a bike?) any other day.

That being said, I'll be spending the evening at the gym with the other losers true athletes.

They made a movie from Love In The Time of Cholera??? That's my favorite Garcia Marquez work! Excellent choice for Valentine's gift.

I like a small box of truffles from Godiva (the kind with 2 truffles) - A sweet for my Sweet - and a romantic dinner at a first class restaurant. The kind where I wear a dress with decolletage and ultrasheer stockings with a sexy but sweet garter belt. And slingbacks.

It's a lovely day/way to honor all that is sacred in your romantic bond - and to stoke the fire that keeps drawing the two of you together.

Yep, I've got great ideas on how to celebrate St V's day - but no one with whom to celebrate it! All in good time, all in good time.

Edit.

No. In the movie "Serendipity", the plot revolves around a name and phone number left inside a copy of "Love in the Time of Cholera". That's why he gave them both together. Very sweet and thoughtful.

I think that's the key to a good Valentine (or any gift for that matter)---thoughtfulness.

I ordered her something online, but for propriety's sake I'd rather not say where.

Not an equipment vendor sponsored on BT, eh?

Valentine's day usually takes a back seat because it is also my daughter's birthday.  She will be 4 this year.  Can anyone guess how much I'm looking forward to boys trying to put the moves on my daughter on Valentine's day when I'm very much going to be around (and tough looking) for every one of them for a looooong time because of my tri training?  Because it's her birthday I will demand that she spend it with her family.  More specifically me, and if any boys are there, my guns, knives, bow, chuks, tonfa, etc.

Back on topic - so this year not only is V-day competing with that, but with my wife being 7+ mos. preggers she's not really in the mood for the big romantic event.  I think some ice cream and quiet time for her is about the best thing I could give her.

Thanks to the tip on the lower price on the iPod shuffle on the other thread, I ordered one for my husband and had it engraved with a love note.

I love that movie, Serendipity.  I can never watch it too many times.  It's up there with You've Got Mail and Harry Loves Sally.

I like to make a bunch of red & pink stuff for dinner - usually spaghetti w/ marina sauce or salmon, red jello which no one eats, pink frosted cake, strawberry milk, a salad with red cabbage & tomatoes.   My boys liked it when they were little, and now they think it's corny, which is totally the reaction that let's me know they know that they are loved.

my GF and I are going to see Stomp in NYC.  I also got her the movie The Notebook, she is bugging me to see it.   Oh yeah and dinner, and a cute little v-day bag with a bunch of gum in it, she really doesn't like sweets, but loves gum, weird i know.

I hope she gets me a new bike computer from Polar.

You are a good Valentine!

My boss who is very wealthy, gave his wife a large gift certificate to go shopping. However, he put it in a box with dozens of pink Starburst candies. (her favorite flavor) His wife was most impressed with the Starburst candies because she knew that he had to buy several bags and take the time to pick out just the pink ones for her.

Thoughtfulness wins again!

(BTW I cried---make that SOBBED---when I watched and read "The Notebook". I wonder if it has the same effect on guys?)

Valentine's day is the only other day (besides my anniversary) that I get flowers. Always roses (my fave, I'm traditional), usually red. I keep telling hubby that they way over priced that day, but he does it anyway. This year, he's also made dinner plans and an undisclosed location and has had them for several weeks. I'm a hopeless romatic. I love this stuff.

His bday is this week, and well, I finally caved and let him buy a plasma HDtv, so no gift for him. I do want to do something small for Valentines for him (a gift, not an action...) but have no ideas. Gents, what would you appreciate (again, gift) on this holiday makde for females?

All of your qualifications aside, we be simple creatures.  There are only two answers this question and he's already got the TV.

Before we had kids, I bought a box of the Vday cards school kids give each other. I got home early from work, wrote something romantic in each one, laid them out in a trail through our apartment from the front door to a box with gold earrings.

A couple years later I got the same kind of cards and wrote something in each, but hid them all over the house so she was coming across them for a few days. A couple had "coupons" redeemable for Valentines day type activities.

Gift suggestion for a guy: anything electronic.

Gotta add to the slightly off topic statement:

Those hearts are gross- they taste like chalk!
