I actually run with a german shepherd - husky mix. She's almost 12 years old and loves it.

I always keep her on a leash and for the first mile I feel like I'm dragging her because she wants to stop and sniff something every 5 seconds.

That's her in Flagstaff, AZ. Her first time in snow, she loved it!

my last dog a German Shepard/ boarder collie mix was too old when i started running to really be able to get into it. i now have (dont laugh) a schnoodle that im training to be able run with me, when i take her on walks we run part of it and im strict on her but shes getting it. and i know by her speed im holding her back, just working on distance.

I occasionally run with one of our dogs, but my wife runs with them 3-4 times a week. They are standard poodles. My wife generally runs about 5 miles with them. I have gone as long as 8-9 miles.

No, not my dog, but I do borrow my cousin's dog! The hubby doesn't like me running by myself in the woods so I take my cousin's very scary looking but absolutley wimpy Doberman w/ me - she is great!

....And yes I ALWAYS have her on a leash. I'm sorry I DON'T CARE HOW NICE YOU THINK YOUR DOG IS!!!!!! FYI some people are affraid of dogs - and you do not know how your dog will react in different situations - SO DUHHHH - ALWAYS keep your animal on a leash!!!!!!.....>>>>>>sorry.... rant over

AND FYI - Scott Jurek runs w/ his Husky.....mmmm...Scott Jurek.......

I have a chocolate lab and we will do short runs together at times. 3-5 mi. Problem is he goes out  in a flash and then usually is getting dragged back home.

I'll do some of my short E1 runs with my black lab. We used to do agility together so she loves when I take her with me!

Yep, Shepherd here. See photo

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

We run together for my warmup mile or so then we run toghether for my cool down mile. Leash always. The vet says the exercise is the best for her hips. Too much more and that would not be true.

My Saint Bernard always runs the first mile or two loop with me.  She can run farther on turf, but roads are a little rough on her joints.  But at the pace that I go (8-9 Minute/Miles) she is walking/trotting.

Maggie has a tough time managing her pace to hit her negative splits.

Great thread!

We have a smooth coated collie and I hope to start running with him this winter. When I took up running last year, bringing him along was the last thing on my mind. I was just trying to keep 'myself' going.

I can't wait to take him out with me this year, but it's going to be a bit longer. We're still getting into the mid-90's with the heat index. Yikes!

My labs love to run... though I'm not running much these days.  Just make sure you get clearance from your vet to run the pup (you don't want to start too soon), and once you do start, you'll want to gradually add the mileage, just like you  would yourself.

Enjoy the new addition .

I run our dog at least twice a week ... or should I say that she runs me?

We have a five year old Great Dane. Her "trot" is about a 7:30 - 8:00 /mile. When it is cold out, we have no problem holding a 7/minute pace for three miles ... that is, if I am up to it. With that said, she is a short distance runner. I never run her more than 4 miles.

I usually take all three of my dogs on my warm up lap (1 mile around my horse pasture.) It gets a little crazy when they see a rabbit -- almost pulls my shoulder out of the socket! I have a Rhodesian Ridgeback, a husky and a border collie/husky mix.

After my warmup around the property I will often take one of them for a couple more miles on the dirt roads -- usually the husky or the ridgeback since the border collie mix is getting a little older.

I used to run with the dogs on trails.  Now I only have one left (dog, that is, not trails), and he's 9.  I took him with me on an "easy" 3 mile run recently, and had to give him aspirin for the next 2 days.  So I think his running days are behind us now.

When she was 2, I once took my other dog with me for a 10 mile mtn bike ride.  She was good for about 8 of them.  After that, I learned to always bring along their dog booties for hiking/running/biking trips.

I run with Cody, my Australian Shepherd about 3 times a week, if not more. She can make it 3-5 miles, but I've never tried any farther. It took her a while to learn how to pace, and now that she 'gets' it, she runs a 7:30min/mile pretty comfortably. Just make sure you have water for your pup!

I have two labs that I run with me usually once a week or so.  I have a hard time running them both at the same time so I will do laps and switch pooches halfway through.

Good luck with your lab.  They are much better dogs if you spend lots of time with them when they are little.  They are awesome.

Border Collie mix - always on a leash! She's almost ten now and has trouble going for more than 2-3 miles but when she was younger she'd go for as long as 8.

105 lb. German Shepherd/Great Dane/Wolf mix. Not on the leash in 2 ft of snow. Embarassed

He can't run much anymore due to his arthritis but used to do up to 3 miles with me. Since I run very lowly and he has long legs it was really more of a trot for him. Now we only go on 1-hour walks--every morning. At almost 14, he's still in great shape.

With two of his buddies at the dog sitter's:

What a beauty!!! My neighbor has three Great Danes. When they were 80-lb "puppies" I used to climb over the fence and play with them aka roll in the dust and get slobbered all over. Fun! Now that they're 160 lb I just talk to them and pat them on the head across the 6-ft fence...
