Subject: How many 50 mile + rides?
So I'm doing my first HIM (Mooseman on June 7th). I've been following the BT HIM beginner plan with many variations, although I've tried to keep the actual training time as close as possible.  With about 4 weeks left, I just noticed that I really haven't done any 50-60 mile rides, but I've done a bunch from 35-45 miles. I did a brick after my last 45 mile ride and felt really good and basically able to maintain my regular run pace at about 7:30 per mile.

How many 50+ mile rides should I try to do in the next 4 weeks? I want to get a bit more distance under my belt but I don't want to mess with my taper either.

Thanks!

At this point, just follow the plan.  Stop second guessing it.  Better to go into a race a little undertrained than overtrained.

Next time, step up to the intermediate plan if you feel the beginner plan is short on miles.

I have friends following both the beginner and intermediate HIM plan which I think has both bike and run workouts listed by time. Some folks ride 20 mph others 15 how far you get in 3 hour ride can greatly vary. One issue they have as older women is the time listed for training isn't long enough to train them fully for the run or bike. They have upped the time to make it so they reach the bike and run distances or on the bike slightly farther.

I would suggest next two or maybe three (depends on your taper) long rides do 55-60 miles instead of doing the time. If you live where there are hills ride all the hardest hills you know and loop around and ride them again if you only have a few.

4 wks? You have plenty of time before a taper. Even in taper mode a 50 miler is OK as long as you go easy.

I would recommend doing 3 long rides in the next 3 weeks. Two at 56 miles and one at 65+ miles. Ya, you aren't doing your planned training but if your planned training is too easy than adjust it and improve. You know your body better than a cookie cutter training plan.

The bike is where you gain your endurance and what allows you to stay fresh for the run. It is your #1 priority going into a first HIM.

I'm going to say this post is right on the money.  I only did 35 and 40-milers last year before my first HIM -- and for me -- it made for a brutal bike for the last 10 miles and I totally blew up on the run as a result of lacking bike fitness.

As mentioned, get some serious biking done now before your 2 week taper.  The beauty of the bike (as opposed to the run) is you can up the mileage with a much lower chance of injury (compared to running) and the Recovery is also 5X faster than running.

What I plan to do is one Century ride this Sunday, and two 50+-milers, and I am 31 days out from my HIM.  During my 2 week taper though I don't have any rides over 20 miles planned.  I also plan to run just 2 or 3 miles after the rides.  Nothing crazy, short quick tempo runs off the bike.  I just want to train my muscles to get used to running after biking.

Even though the plan does not call for any rides greater than 2.5 hours you still gain endurance from consistency. You train day after day after day. I believe that while it is better to throw a few 50+ rides in I don't think that it, in and of itself, is the key to your overall fitness level on race day.

I'm going to Mooseman as well. I'm going to be doing three more 60 mile bikes, two hard out and the last one just tooling along and seeing if I can stay in zone 1-2. That should about do it as the next week is Mooseman

I had the same revelation you described last year when I used the same plan to prepare for last year's Timberman 70.3. I followed the plan without much deviation and and rode the 56 mile course a week before the race and finished the bike without a problem and completed the run as planned. You should be fine...no need for anxiety now. Just follow the plan and if you want just pile on extra miles on the Sunday rides.

Best of luck
