Just went out to Lake Placid for a training camp and was humbled by the size of the climbs on the course. While riding with my current training partners I have always been a strong rider but when up in LP I was humbled by amount of times I was dropped during rides while going up hills.

Currently using a 12-25 cassette, should I go to a 12-27? Will it make a considerable difference compared to what I am using or do I just need to develop my legs more for climbing?

I'd say 12-27.... you have the same high gear and 2 more teeth on the low end if you need them. I just climbed 12000 ft in a very difficult century and I practiced on a 39-25.... OUCH. For the actual ride I had a compact 50-34 and a 12-27.

This may not be comparing apples to apples but I'd get a 12-27 in a heartbeat...... and maybe a compact crank.

Got my new Ultegra cassette @ probikekit for $ 42 shipped, but I think price has gone up a lot.

Good luck !

A different cassette is not going to stop you from getting dropped on hills.  That's simply power-to-weight.  If your cadence was uncomfortably low while climbing at your deired effort level, then more gears might be useful.

FWIW, I did LP with a 34/50 compact and a 12-25 cassette.

What he said ^^^.  If you are struggling with the 25 to maintain any sort of reasonable cadence, then a 27 might be in order.

I used an 11-23 with a 53/39.  But everyone is different.

IM Rule #7:  Having a 12-27 and not needing it is infinitely better than not having a 12-27 and needing it
