I've got conflicting answers on this. Can a healthy athletic 13 year old train for a sprint?

There are lots of kids around here that do sprint tris.  There are junior events run as well.

I did a few tris when I was in highschool!

I can't see any reason why a health 13 year old who wants to do sprints shouldn't be able to do one.  I think it should be encouraged~

The biggest thing is that endurance training puts a lot of stress on growing bones, muscles and immune systems.   However, I've heard quite a few stories of kids who are successful at it.  On this site gocorey (sp?) is 18 I think, and has been doing it for a while, he might have some better answers for you.

I would think sprint distance would be ok.  A lot of races have age limits though, so be prepared for that.  Or, an adult might have to race with the child to make it ok.

13's no problem unless your growing, then it can be an issue
I ran a marathon when I was 13 and Im still alive and able to run (but learning better form now)

On a side note when growing comes around you can tell and your body can tell because the bones grow before muscles so muscular imbalances will come.

Yes, and I would think he/she should be encouraged to do so.

My first tri I crossed the finish line right between a 12 year old boy and an 80 year old man.

yea for sure, I did my first when I was 10. And I'm 15 now, at the National race I just did on the 7th they had a youth 13-15 age group, but I had to race 16-19 because its your age as of Dec. 31, 2005. then I will be 16
