Subject: lets talk about rest
Hi..if anyone could help clear up the whole "rest" issue I would be greatful. I know that rest is supposed to be when you get the benefits and I know that I do not rest enough. I mean I take 1-2 rest days a week, but rarely a rest week unless it just happens.

So...how often do you guys take rest weeks? And do you rest the whole week or what? I am doing my first tri a week Sunday. I plan to taper next week (swim, bike and run once each and skip my weekly strength training). After the tri I want to build recovery weeks into my program. Should it be about every 6 weeks or so? And do you just go down in intensity or laze out the whole week? I have found that whenever I have a forced rest week (vacation or school or something) that despite usually eating like crap I always seem to loose a couple pounds, so I think I need to plan and use recovery better. Any thoughs?

Thanks-Kirsten

A rest week usually comes every 4th week. The weeks before you should be building up endurance, strength, speed, etc. The rest week should be about 50% of your load the week prior as a rule of thumb.
Go luck training.

I schedule my recovery weeks as every 4th week. I cut down on the mileage by 30 - 50%, but keep the same number of workouts. I notice a big drop in my performance if I try to delay the recovery week. I also feel much better after the recovery week. So, schedule it ASAP and put it on your calendar for the next few months!

Do people rest from strength training too?

i never have (rested a week for strength training).  i treat each muscle group as a activity and work them once a week...it is my opinion that you should not have the need to work the same muscle group more then 1-2x week....so that leaves each group 6 days off...i dont think they need any more as the next week, soreness is gone.  although if u wanna see growth, u do have to cycle in light and heavy days and each session intensity has to be high or u will see little results...kinda opposite of periodization in tri training...just what i notice about me.

I'm with you Bear.
I have never taken a whole week off. But it is funny that this post came out. I was just reading an email from one of my training partners that was concerned that I might be getting burnt out and tired. I got dropped quite a few times on our long ride last week (Iban Mayo style) and he was worried and thought I should take a week off since I have been training and racing non stop since last Nov. I have a race this Sun and was seriously thinking about doing nothing next week. My competitive side says "I need to push harder", that I have just been coasting. But my sensible side says "what could it hurt?" The only thing is, I wouldn't know what to do for a whole week!

I try to schedule my rest days, although mine tend to be altered by regular life-events. I haven't taken a full week off from my training since I started, but if I miss a workout or two, I just pick up the next one as it's scheduled. That being said, I have stopped strength training until after my tri, so I can concentrate on swimming technique and endurance, and to improve my current strengths.

I have noticed that since I've 'cleaned up' my nutrition, I don't feel the fatigue as much as I used to.
