An upcoming half marathon in Hickory NC shows 846 ft in elevation for the race. I've seen part of the course and it's fairly hilly; just curious as to how this figure is compared to other races.

Since the race is a loop it's obvious the hills and the valleys "cancel out" because the ending point is the same as the starting point. How exactly is the 846 feet calculated ? Sounds like a stupid ?.....I know somebody will set me straight.

I think it adds all the climbing and ignores the downhill. Otherwise all loop races would appear flat.

Edit: Remember, if you mark points too far apart, any hills in between will not be seen by the route tracker, it will only recognize the net difference between those points.

DMarkSwan is right. That's why it's called "climbing" and not "elevation change".

It checks the elevation delta between consecutive points and if it's positive it gets added to the climb totals.

Thanks people. Got it.

I recalculated and climbing went from 846 to 1150 (or something close).

Out of curiosity, how does 1150 feet of climbing compare to other half marys.

Thanks again.

Per BT-RT, Sunburst had ~1600 feet climbing over a full marathon, and I thought it qualified as "hilly." Mostly rollers, though, just enough to keep it from being a PR course. Apparently yours is hillier than that.

Bear, thx for the info. I drove a little bit of the course and that part was no joke with regard to hills.

I'll have to take it easy and just finish, hopefully.

Didn't know you were completing the 50 state club. WOW.

Awesome. Keep rolling !

Just for fun I did a totally unfair comparison with another 1/2 Mary in NC, Battleship NC half in Wilmington. Under 400 feet of climbing.

Although while mapping I noticed I either was being to sloppy by then and fell off the Cape Fear Bridge or the software doesn't recognize the elevation of the bridge.

I'm doing Wilmington for my first, this November.

LOL... not good to fall off from that far up, is it ?

Hey, I went to the web site for your race in November...pretty cool race it looks like. Have fun !

This will be my first also. This is by far the hilliest ( a word ? ) half mary I've seen so far but I imagine there are much more hilly races than this.
