Subject: Words of encouragement or "jerkish" comments in a race
I would like to hear some others comments on some of the best words of encouragement they've heard while racing and also some of the dou**ebag comments that you may have heard too. During St. Anthony's this year I cramped so bad on the run, that my legs did not bend at all. I finished the race with a Frankenstein like jog and fell into the arms of a physical therapist that was at the finish. The whole time I was attempting to run through it I heard, the "looking strong" comment. Come on. I appreciate the encouragement but hate being lied to (just joking). I had never cramped like that before. I learned from it and have not cramped like that again. Triathlons seem to bring out the best of a persons personality (most of the time). This should be a fun post.

In the last half mile of a race or so, I passed someone on the run, and a spectator yelled something like, "good job passing that guy... now pick it up and pass those next 3 ahead of you."  I liked that, and I did pass the other three.

Actually have never heard anything "jerkish."

I believe if you do a search there was quite a large thread on the topic of "words of encouragement" during races.

I would find it hard to believe that anyone was trying to be a jerk though.  It's just that most volunteers have simple, canned responses and say it to anyone not knowing the individual's emotions/feeling/pain at that point in time.  Just my .02.

In my first tri ever (Mulletman), I was about 1/4 of a mile from the finish and there were a couple of guys standing by the side of the road wearing mullet wigs.   I must have looked thirsty and not all that happy, because one guy yelled. "the beer is in the tent to the right".  I chuckled for the last bit of the run.  My friends asked me what I was laughing about when I went past them.

To me, as long as a person is still moving forward, they are looking strong.  I love any positive reinforcement and wouldnt be a fan of the truth sometimes i.e. 'what you got a load in your pants? lets move it!' or 'cmon red faced beet dude! dont go dying on us!'.  So, in summary, like the 'yays' and looking goods and almost theres.  If I am feeling lied to, its cuz I didnt train or execute properly.

I had a guy pass me on the run during the first mile of a sprint and say, "there's another one I don't have to worry about." I didn't say anything as he went by in a full sprint (we were in the same wave, so obviously it took him until a mile into the run to catch me in the first place) but I kept an eye on him and ran by him with about 200 yards left as he was at an almost fast walk pace. I didn't say anything but made sure he saw it was me going by him. It's funny because neither one of us was going to be on the podium anyway so I didn't see his point. I guess people have to try and motivate themselves somehow and sometimes they go about it in a negative way. Have fun and do your best.

One that stands out for me was at the half way turn around during the run. I was running next to a guy and he said "Lets negative split this bit@h"  I thought that was pretty cool.

Okay my wife has a bit warped sense of humor.

I have a friend of mine who introduces his wife this way:  "This is my first wife, Jane."  (They've been married 2? years, so she's used to it by now.

Is that humor?  Or he just being a jerk?  I can tell you my wife would not put up with what Jane is stomaching.

Sorry - not trying to highjack the thread.  Back to words of encouragement / jerkish comments . . .

one of the most positive comments for me came while running a 1/2 marathon and around mile 3 a guy came up to me and said I was going at a good clip and asked if he could pace with me.  I liked the fact that he didn't just sneak in and try to use me to draft...he let me know he was there and complimented me as a fellow runner. We ran the rest of the race together and we both PR'd and I haven't run a half this fast since and likely never will.

One of the most jerkish things (it wasn't a comment) was when I was running a marathon in Vegas.  We had a head wind pretty much the entire run.  Early in the run I pass this guy that probably was 5"5" 130 lbs, I'm 6'1 maybe 150 back then.  anyway, as i pass he gets behind me a drafts me.  I make a comment to him after about a mile that there are no free rides.  he is non-responsive.  I tried picking it up but couldn't loose him.  then I slowed he stayed with me but would not move from behind me.  yeah, I let the guy get to me and take me out of my race!  And I will always remember him as a Jerk!

BTW, this went on until about mile 20...he never said a single word...I could just hear his breathing and footsteps. Then I hit the wall and wanted to cry.  Jerkface found another person to draft off of and I never did see him again!

At the Musselman this year as I was heading into T1 a spectator said "You made it through the hard part!". I just said "You've never done one of these have you?".

When I pass people towards the end of the run, I like to encourage them to stay with me (as long as they don't look totally wiped out). There's nothing like a partner on the last mile or two to motivate you to keep the effort up. This works well in road races too.

I know this is alittle off topic but I ran a 10k the weekend and about ten feet from the starting line someone was holding a sign that said

"Way to go,  Looking strong Only 32,800 feet left"

I thought that was encouraging

Oh yeah! I did a half marathon trail run... and about 1/2 way through a guy used me as his rabbit. He said he was going to pace me because he needed something to pick up his speed. I have NEVER been someone's rabbit on a course. He basically kept my walk/run interval with me till the end. It was cool and made me not slack because I didn't want to have him see me slow down.

Humor.  It's funny to see people start processing that statement, especially ones who know he's been married for a long time to Jane.  It's true, she is his first (and only) wife.

Back on topic, I'm not a fan of "pick it up" or "just a little faster" (you have no idea how my race has gone.  While I didn't look "bad" at CdA, I'd crashed and broke my collarbone, so I was going as fast as I could given the injury and subsequent change in race nutrition/strategy.

Now I do try to figure out something clever about the specific situation.  As a spectator or fellow participant I've joked about catching up to the pace booty up ahead.  During my run last week, I almost put on a show about being chased down (my running partner was right behind me) but figured the other people on the trail wouldn't appreciate the humor.

During an offroad tri, I crashed on the MTB and the chain came off and got stuck between the cassette and derailleur.  It must have taken me 5 minutes to get the chain unjammed and reset.  On the run, I hear this yelling/grunting.  This guy passes me about a 2 minutes later and says "passed another fast biker".  D-Bagery in full force.  Side note, I found out later I still finished ahead of him because he started in the wave ahead of me.

Other than that one time I have only seen positive encouragement during tris.

One of the best ones I've had was at IMCDA.  It was a chalk sign on the run, just outside transition.  It was a drawing of a penis at full attention.  Under it was written "Keep it Up. Don't go Limp"  I had a good laugh at that one during the marathon.

Had to walk the last 6 miles of a marathon due to an injury. Some spectators yelled out:
"good job, you're going to finish!" thought that was a great thing to say!

Yeah, I did, I thought that was a really cool thing to say.  He and I were back and forth on the run quite a bit I said something like "I'm with ya" or something like that, I can't remember exactly because at that point I was in hurtsville.

Have to step in for a minute---that is just the way he is!  He has a very warped sense of humor, which makes him so lovable.  Sometimes she just looks at him and tells him he needs to find his 2nd wife for the night...always with a smile on her face

At the Austin Marathon the locals seem to think it's funny to say `Last hill!' when there's like 10 left. You hear that and then get to the top and see yet another hill. And another. And another. After about three times it's no longer funny.
