Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I go to Lifetime this morning and do a hard full-body, core workout for about 45 minutes then decide to hit the pool for maybe a 1/4 mile just to get wet. I'm pretty fatigued from my workout now and swimming is relatively new to me and definately my week spot, but the lessons from Debbie @ Swim Atlanta have helped. I hit 8 laps and felt great so I thought I'd go for 16, then 20, then, 24, then 32!!! A personal best. The kicker is that I NEVER got tired! My heart rate never got above 140. I could have kept going if I had the time so I did 2 more laps at an all-out sprint just to tire myself out! The point of all of my babble is 'Where the heck did that come from?'. I've experienced that on many runs before but my ability was always there with running...not swimming...until now I suppose. Has anyone else ever had that magic moment? |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ahhh.. that's called 'feeling the water'. No worries, you'll feel like a rock again within a few swims. ![]() Seriously, I know what you are talking about. Congrats on getting to that point. I always like when someone extends an intended workout when they are feeling good (provided it's not a taper for a race). Although you will have off and on swims, you now have a good benchmark from which to build from. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() OMG! Thank you for explaining the 'feeling the water'..I had the same experience as this post. One random day I just felt great and swam 34 laps. I was like 'Whaa Hoo I guess I am ready for Kona' (never mind the whole I can't run more than 3 miles at a time)...Anyway....a few days later I go back to the pool and...sink....like a rock...I was so bummed! Where did my fish gills go? At least now I know I have it in me..Its just finding it again...Please fish fairy gods...come back to me! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I will give you my theory on "feeling the water". It is a mental thing and not as much physical as you think. I find when I swim 3 days or more a week (at least 10K total yards per week) for a few weeks....I start to get the feel most workouts. Yes, the 10K in yards is the physical side, but swimming regularly gets me into the mental flow of it. I really think it is a matter of the volume of repetition and looking forward to getting into the pool. Suggestion, figure out the workout set you like to do (and not drills). When you see it on your schedule, think about it well before you get into to the pool and look forward to knocking it out. Doing it better than the last time. You would be surprised the result. Man, when the feeling comes and the body does what it knows to do, it is sweet to watch the times down and endurance go up. Edited by thecaptin 2008-08-28 11:55 AM |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I swam my longest swim yesterday, which was 30 lengths (or 15 laps = 1500m) and was pretty much exhausted afterwards and into the night. Hoping to get to that "crazy swim" point someday... Swimming is not easy for me. I enjoy it, but it's just not easy for me yet... |

The difference between 2 and 3x a week in the pool is huge. I find that when I swim 3x a week I am much faster and have a better recall on what I did the prior swim as far as technique goes. 9k-10k a week seems to be the magic number.
That being said if you have really poor technique you are better off swimming 4-5x a week for much shorter distances (basically until your stroke starts to break down) |

You guys either have more time or a lot more speed (likely) than I. But I am working on it. I can pretty much go indefinitely now and yes, it is very much mental. If I focus strictly on body position/head position each stroke, my breathing is good and I don't get tired for a long time. There are times however that it is a struggle no matter how I try...Sometimes 1500 is easy other times 800 is a chore....going for 2k tonight.....I need a longer distance swim once more before my race sept 6... |

If laps, I strongly suggest breaking it up into sets. You will enjoy it much more. Also, the feel comes when you do not "think", just do. Try letting go of all the form considerations and just swim without putting as much thought into it. Invest one workout with no drills, just timed sets of "mindless" swimming. PM me for some set ideas. |
