Subject: which swim is faster?

Living far away from any open water, it's hard for me to judge which is faster...

1) a pool swim

2) an open water swim in the ocean with a wetsuit on an average day

I'm trying to guage what my swim time may be at IMFL.  I know it depends on race condition, but given an average day, and based on your own personal experience, which is faster?

I've heard the wetsuit makes you more buoyant, but on the other hand, does it not restrict the motion of your legs, or increase mass, or increase drag?

Then on the other hand, in open water swims, you don't have to stop and turn around every 25m.

Anyhow, I'd be interested to know!

Impossible to answer

Saltwater & wetsuit theoretically make you faster, but too many variables (surf, wind, current, course layout, measurement, sun placement, size of crowd) play into it to say one is faster than the other on any given day

So, I take it that on average you would say it's a wash, they're about equal.

I treat them the same.  But that really doesn't matter either.  Due to course measurement, I have been as fast as 1:30/100 and as slow as 2:00/100 with similar conditions....

I'm giving myself a 15 min window that I plan to finish in.

PLUS, you can draft someone in the race, not so much in a pool swim.  At least where I swim when I'm the only person in the lane.

True that!  At HIM FL, my last 1.1 miles (run) was 11:00, well over my average for the other 12 miles.  It really works you over when you're trying to pace yourself!

I'm going to take a stand and say that at the same effort, a pool swim with flip turns will be faster than an ow swim w/wetsuit based on the fact that the pool has less variables (waves, current, sighting).

...Or the course being mismarked.

I did a pool swim for 4,400 yards as part of my FL build up last year and was around 1:24-ish.  Then I did the Chesapeakeman Aqua Velo in brutal choppy conditions and was in the 1:35+ range (wetsuit).

Come FL it was like glass in the Gulf until you got out to the buoys, then there was a little tiny bit of waves (very tiny).  Also wetsuit, ended up 1:20.

So for me it was wetsuit in the Gulf = no wetsuit in the pool basically.

At LP this year it was similar glassy conditions and I swam a 1:18.  Pretty much put that towards the fact that the mass of people is a lot closer than at FL where everyone can spread out.

Assuming relatively calm conditions, good sighting and a little drafting my OW times can be as much as 10 sec/100 yds faster.
