So i was messing around with some friends today playing some pickup lacrosse and having a grand old time and then it happened. I went to put a hit on a guy in front of the cage and clear the ball when i stepped in a hole in front and thrashed my ankle. Just got back from the doc and i am not to run for 4-6 weeks need to be easy on it for at least a week. It is just a sprain and i can swim with a pull buoy in a week or so but my lake Stevens plans are done. Running is by far my weak point and there is not way i can be off for that long giving me only 2 weeks to race day.

It sucks but i guess i should have known better to play such a hard contact sport this far into training. Everything had been going well and despite my lack of logs i was staying true to my plan and only missing maybe 1 or 2 workouts a week. I hope to get back up and do some races around here and just wait till next year. I hope everyone else has a good day.

Dude, that sucks.... BUT you never know.   Lots of people have had pretty bad injuries prior to HIM/IM and still made it to the start line.

Options - Elliptical and aquajogging.   Lots of people swear by those.

Can you ride?

THe doc may be right on but 4-6 weeks may end up being too long.

Right now, ice, elevation and compression

Bad sprains suck.  I did that in 2006 and I wasn't able to even try running for 7 weeks...and that was for a race I didn't want to pull out of and we taped the CRAP out of the ankle.

Even comfortably using my ankle to kick took nearly a month.

Does the race have an aquabike division?  You could switch to that...and just not kick a lot....

Totally stinks...but try to make the best of what you can do.

I agree with Chris, don't give up just yet. If you can start aquajogging in a week and do that while swimming and biking, you may be ok. I'd never recommend training on an injury with risk of worsening it, but if you are careful you never know. Anyway, sorry to hear it, I'm sure it's very frustrating after all that hard work.

Sorry to hear about your injury.  That is the exact reason I quit playing ice hockey in Jan.  I have my first HIM in Sept.  I have been playing hockey for the past ten years but figure it's not worth the risk considering all the time, money, and effort I have put into training.  Don't pack it in just yet though.

I am the sprain ankle king!  I do it at least a few times a year.  I think that 4-6 weeks is crazy.  I've sprained it so bad playing basketball that by the time i limped off the court my ankle was swelled so big that i couldn't get my shoe off.....All you do is ICE ICE ICE and more ICE!!  Then wear an ankle brace and tape it up.  I always run 3-4 days after and it gets so much better.  As long as you keep icing it.  Now i've never been to a Dr. for an ankle sprain so i don't know what they would have told me, but i've had some pretty bad one's and i'm at least doing some running 3-5 days after.

Out? You are not out. It will heal and you still have time before your race. I did my first HIM without ANY running for 4 weeks beforehand (and I did one 5-mile walk) thanks to a an IT band injury.

I pulled the race off just fine. Sure, I walked most of it, but honestly I probably would have either way (I'm horrible at running).

Don't pull the plug yet.

I feel for you. That totally sucks! I just had to punt my HIM / IM plans due to an injury. The best remedy for me was to sign up for another race in 2010.
