![]() How fast do you expect to swim? If in the FOP, get in the front row. Seed yourself accordingly. Run to the water. High step with high knees until about knee deep, then do a dolphin dive or two until it's too deep, then start swimming. If there is any surf, high step over the white water until you can't, then dolphin dive over the whitewater (unless it's too big - also, dolphin divingunder is OK if you are SURE it's deep enough) Find out if there is current beforehand and line up left/right of the first buoy accordingly, let the current take youto the buoy rather than fighting against it to get there. Coming in, look behind you every other stroke or so, see if you can catch a ride on an incoming wave You'll find people run fast to the water, then once past knee deep, they all just slow done. Some don't high step or dolphin, but just slog through it, so be prepared for that. Pre race, walk the area you'll be running into to make sure there aren't any holes, logs, whatever, to trip you up |

I rudely discovered a concrete curb to the boat ramp immersed in the water while trying to get positioned for my start last weekend. I'm sitting there trying to enjoy the moment and want to scream in pain when I hit that darn thing. |

Thanks for the response and the original post with the question in the first place. |

![]() no worries. Beach starts can be fun, but they can also be daunting. I still get nervous with them. Thanks for asking, feeling a bit better. Glad to be home, and thank god the tour is on so I don't have to watch daytime tv. Now it's more the stuff in my head that is causing problems than the stuff in my lungs ![]() |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() just did my first yesterday... I let the wave go for about 15 seconds while I was walking/jogging in as far as possible to avoid the breakers as much as possible then got started - I feel like it's more improtant to start my race in a good rythym and flow... good luck! |
