So yesterday I signed up for a OW swim/5k run race on Thursday, then I went for a run and promptly re-inflamed my achilles tendonitis pretty badly. I signed up for the race b/c I really, really need OW swim experience before my Oly at the end of the month. So what should I do? Just swim and then DNF? Swim, then take a 3.1 mile walk in soaking wet spandex? Forget it and waste the 20 bucks?

Kim, the race isn't by any chance the STroke-n-stride at Boulder Res is it? If so, from what I understand its a very low key event and people do whatever they want. If it were me, I'd go swim and blow off the run....

If it's really that injured, and if you hope to have any kind of triathlon career at all, it might be best to sit this one out. Offer to volunteer. That way you're involved without risking further injury.

Personally I'd go with the swim and then DNF the run or walk if I could. Just make sure if you DNF that you still get your swim time.

If it doesn't bother your achilles, I would swim and then not do the run. If it bothers your achilles whatsoever, don't to the swim.

Number 1 priority should be to get healthy and if doing the swim prevents that, then you're defeating the purpose of your healthy liftestyle altogether.

Hope you heal fast!!!

I think I'd swim and walk in soaking wet spandex. But that's just me. I wouldn't waste the $20, though... that bugs me more than anything!!! Hope you feel better soon! Whizzzzzzzz

Well if you signed up to use to for OWS practice just do the swim.  That said...having done a tri injured with the intent of doing the swim and the bike and walking the run....I couldn't not run.  Too competitive.  Take a page out of coredump's (Chris) book and leave your running shoes in the car.  Walk down in flops...not much of a chance of running in those. That way you won't be tempted.  Esp if your oly is at the end of the month and you want to be healthy for that.  Atke care and hope you feel better soon -SMO

I suffer from chronic tendon problems, and, in fact, fully ruptured my right achilles and had a subsequent surgery. I do not advise rupturing your tendon. That being said, my advice is really just common sense-- (1) if it hurts I don't run for at least two days; (2) I buy the cushiest shoes I can find. I do not wear lighter shoes for races. (3) stretch tendons before every run.

A swim to run might put extra stress on your tendon: your tendons might be cold from the water, and they will be placed in an unstretched position for a long period of time during the swim right before the shock of the run.

Think of your long term goals, not your short. If swimming doesn't bother your leg, then use the swim portion as a practice race and then drop out.

You should not feel bad about dropping out. Pro athletes do it all the time. Its better to do that than mess up your body for months.

Good Luck,

Randy
