Subject: Any Stand up Paddle Boarders on here with advice?

I gave it a try earlier this year on vacation and I've started to miss it. Plenty of lakes out this way and I'd like to get my own board for some xtraining/fun.

That said, I don't even know where to begin looking. I'd like to stay in the ~$500 range, but I don't know enough about them to know if that's even feasible without buying junk.

Anybody got any thoughts?

I haven't tried it, but I'd like to. I've been looking at SUP boards, and they all look to be in the $800 and up price range, even the inflatable ones. There is a outfitters about an hour from here that sells used equipment, and they have a used one I am going to look at for $400. Maybe you could find something used. Good luck!

My family and I have done it many times on vacation in ocean and lakes and like it.  I have looked into getting one for our lake cabin, but balk at the high price.  I have not found even an entry level one for less than $750 or so (and not even Tri related!).  Plus, we would actually like to have 2, as they are fun to go out together on.  I keep my eye open for a used one, but they are few and far between in MN.  We can rent them pretty cheaply at a place only 3 miles from the cabin, so go that route at least once a summer.  Not having to store them, etc. is a plus too.

They are a blast though!

Hmm... made out of fiberglass/carbon...

I wonder how feasible making one is.

Well, you can get a mediocre package at Costco that includes a board, a paddle and a carrying case in the 600 dollar range. Or at least the last time I checked. I actually made mine with an old wind surfing board I bought off of Craigslist for $20. I removed all the sail mounting stuff and the cut a yoga mat and glued it to the top. It works great! I wouldn't take it in the surf or anything and it's a little heavy. Of course keep in mind you need one that's at least ten feet or so and on the wider side for proper stability.

I also did it on vacation then tried it when I got home thru a rental.  Best deals seemed to be about $800 with a paddle.  Here locally in so cal I imagine I could maybe find a used one for less on craigslist or something

The inflatable ones look really cool.  I haven't tried it before, but it looks really sturdy.  I always see a guy at the beach with one, and he deflates it and folds it up in the trunk of his BMW in less than 5 minutes.

How handy are you with fiberglass. Foam blanks( the core of the SUP) can be bought or made, a couple of layers of S glass over top (stay away from trying to work with carbon fiber) vacuum bag the whole thing to set the rocker and your good to go. check out www.swaylocls.com if you want to see what goes into making SUP's or surfboards.

^ appreciate the info and the site.

I've worked with CF quite a bit more than fiberglass, but I'm pretty handy with the carbon and they seem pretty comprable in terms of working with them.
