Subject: Flat & hot or cool & hilly?

I am finally answering the question for THIS triathlete.  My 2014 self-imposed challenge & experiment will occur within a single state.

Eagleman - 70.3 in June - Bike course has about 300' of total climbing over 56 miles.  Most of the "climbing"  is under 1% Grade.  Heat index has been over 110 F in past years.  Eastern MD

Savageman - 70.0 in Sept - Bike course has over 4000' of total climbing with 75% from miles 18-43 and the Westernport Wall peaking at 31%.  Savage Mtn provides 1800' in 7.2 Miles.  High temp is normally in the low 70's. Western MD

Anyone want to join me?

Savageman is on my bucket list, maybe this year, not sure yet. I WILL get my brick in that road!

I did both this year. I'll happily take cool and hilly every time. One course is boring and the other is spectacular. I'll be back for Savageman again and again, but I can't say the same for Eagleman.

I can't speak to either race, but all four HIM's I've done have been flat, and I'm kinda over it now. I'm doing one in may that is hilly. I'm not a podium challenger at that distance so for me it's a personal challenge, and completing a flat one is not a big deal for me anymore, so I'd take hilly and cool any day, especially if hot is in the 100+ range. Not so much for the bike, but I couldn't imagine running in that kind of weather. Not to mention that the hottest part of the day will be when you're running, not cycling.

Also, from what I hear, "hilly" sounds like a massive understatement for Savageman.

Good luck with whichever you do! I want to do Savageman some day as well.

It will be my 2nd time doing each race.

Eagleman was my first 70.3 and was the highest heat index on record.  Waiting for the swim start WITHOUT wetsuits, we were hiding in the shade of support trucks to avoid the heat at 8am.  It did NOT get better.

Last year, I did Savageman and got my brick.  Now I know what it takes, and I want to try to race it.  Harder than 140.6 in many ways.

These two are both 'local' for me. Eagleman is the high prestige 70.3 in these parts, but I've never done it and I can't say that it appeals. Flat and hot does not sound like so much fun. Savageman was definitely the most enjoyable tri that I've ever done. It felt like everybody was competing against the course rather than against each other, and that added to the enjoyment of a spectacular setting.

(I was surprised to see that there are what appear to be fairly stiff time cutoffs for Savageman this year. 5 hours for swim + bike is not so easy as it might be elsewhere. When I rode SM last year, my bike split was 50% longer than it was in my previous HIM.)

I would have made the bike cutoff by 52 seconds and my buddy would have missed it by 4 minutes. But we both made their overall cutoff by 30 minutes with horrible runs.  Interesting.

So after a 1:15 swim, a 3:45 bike?  Only about 1/3 of the field finished their bike THAT fast!

They may want to reconsider their standard cutoffs.  Waterman /= Savageman.
