Overall Rank = /
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 14/14
Pre-race routine:

Kris picked me up at my hotel so our families could sleep later and we could get there in time to get a good transition spot. I ate a couple of oatmeal squares.
Event warmup:

Rode a few miles of the course to put my mind at ease over the tire thing (see my logs from Fri. and Sat.) and then walked around and stretched out.
Swim
  • 19m 20s
  • 580 yards
  • 03m 20s / 100 yards
Comments:

Since this was a clockwise swim and I breathe to the left I really had to work on the sighting which went well. I started slow and relaxed which also went well. I did feel the anxiety start to build and by the time I rounded the first bouy I was in the breastroke mode. About halfway down that leg the next wave (female under 35 caught me which added to the anxiety). This swim was definitely better than Minneman even though it was slower.
What would you do differently?:

Again I need more open water swimming. It is getting better and it really is a head game for me as I swim alot longer distances in the pool. But in the lake there is no black line on the bottom, and walls every 25 yds to kick off of. Also i should have swam futher in before starting to walk out of the water (I was about shoulder deep when I quit swimming).
Transition 1
  • 04m 34s
Comments:

I had a great spot at the end of the rack. Every thing was laid out well I just need to get faster.
What would you do differently?:

Practice my transitions.
Bike
  • 35m 17s
  • 10.3 miles
  • 17.52 mile/hr
Comments:

My speed built as this leg progressed. At the 1/4 way mark I was at about 15.5 mph ave. I thought to myself "well this race is in the tank". But then my legs really came around and I was able to get hammering. I was very happy with my hill climbing (the last month paid off) as I was blowing past people on hills. Coming down the final straight I saw my mph ave was 18! I lost some of that navigating the end of the bike.
What would you do differently?:

NOT A THING! (Except buy a new bike :) )
Transition 2
  • 03m 48s
Comments:

I was surprised at how slow this transition was. It probably had to do with the loop you had to do in the transition zone that evened up every one's placement in the area. Of course the fact that I racewalk will lengthen that run time.
What would you do differently?:

Expreiment with Yankz, put my HR monitor watch on my wrist instead of the bike so I don't have to switch it.
Run
  • 30m 6s
  • 2.5 miles
  • 12m 02s  min/mile
Comments:

I really didn't feel too bad starting this run. Of course racewalking I'm getting passed left and right but I just focused on my form and kept it going. My pace was really good for me - almost 1:30/mile improvement from Minneman - one month ago.
What would you do differently?:

Again not a thing. My pace improvement meant that my work from this last month really had paid off. I am starting to feel confident that a 10 min/mile pace might be possible.
Post race
Warm down:

Had a bottle of Gatoraide and some watermelon. Walked around and talked with Pam and Megan. Called Gary (my coach) and gave him the good news

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Again my biggest time sucker was the swim. I should have been 3-5 minutes faster there.

Event comments:

I really enjoyed this race and hanging out with the BT people (Autumn, Kris, Kathy).

It was great to meet you Friday and see you again in T1 during the race....you were so relaxed, recongnized me and said hi...very impressive!

Nice way to stay calm with the wave coming in behind you and continue on to a strong race. Sounds like the new bike is great and makes a big difference.

I wished we stayed after the race to visit...but my extended family was wanting to go out for breakfast...bummer we found out today Emily placed 2nd in her AG and we missed getting her award.

See no flats either....you got them out of the way!

Hope to see you again next year....great Race!!

Great race Steve! Congratulations! When I walked the other day, it was all I could do to maintain 15 minute miles, not to mention 12:02! And if you get down to 10:00/mile, you'll walk faster than I run! LOL
