27 | Subject: Ironman Lake Placid 2016 I officially registered for Ironman Lake Placid. Would anyone like to share their experience? I'm finding that getting to the venue is going to be the most difficult part. It is a two hour drive from Albany, NY. And if I fly into SLK Adirondack airport, there is no public transportation or resources to make the 17 mile trek to Lake Placid. Does anyone have any advice? |

13 | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid 2016 Done it twice. Once flew into Albany and once into Burlington VT and took the ferry over. I love LP, but it's a hard IM for this FL guy because I couldn't simulate the long steady climbs during training. Swim is a perfect setting. Find the cable and cruise. Bike pacing is key for a solid race IMO; more than IMWI or IMFL which are my only other experiences. The LP climbs will sneak up on you because nothing is too steep, just very long and spaced out (early, middle, late) to tear you up if not careful. Run is okay, nothing special. |

27 | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid 2016 Did you rent a car both times you did Lake Placid? Where did you stay during race weekend? Is there anything you wish you knew before going there? Thank you for your response Edited by haitwun 2015-08-25 5:01 PM |

108 | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid 2016 I rented a car and flew into Albany, used tribike transport. second time I drove the 17 hours as tribike transport brike my wheels first time and while they claimes they would reimburse the cost of fixing, they didn't. driving sucked but once i got there, it was great to have my own car, the money spent was less than all the rentals, and i could bring all my what if gear. |

Regular 389 | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid 2016 I'll follow this thread as I will be heading there this year to race. I live in FL and already have secured Tri Bike Transport to ship bike. I also have decided to fly into Boston on Wed. (4-5hr drive) . I will rent a car. I am taking my 2 younger sons and decided to make an almost 2 week trip out of it and do a tour of the N.E. I secured housing through VRBO and elected to rent a reasonably priced cabin about 40 minutes away. I don't think this is going to be that big of a deal as I refused to pay some of the prices for local hotels and feel any extra drive time, comfort, rest, etc. trumps staying in cramped hotel . Plus, I am fairly finicky about race week nutrition plan and find restaraunts day in and day out just suck. Good luck. Tom |

27 | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid 2016 What happened to your bike? Did Tri Bike Transport break the wheels? I was considering using them to transport my bike because the thought of shipping my bike in a cardboard box makes me nervous. The airline companies tend to be rough with luggage. |

We did it as a 3 week road trip from Seattle -> Chicago -> Washington DC -> Philadelphia -> Lake Placid, stayed a week, then back from there via Denver. 8000 mile figure eight around the country. In an Audi A3 with a rooftop box, and most of the way with 4 people. We stayed in a rented house a couple miles away from Mirror Lake. One time I stayed 40 miles out and we all HATED that. To each his own if that's your plan. It's cheaper. For IMLP, I shipped my bike to the Ironman Bike Services via FedEx, in a hard case, and they assembled it, then I had them disassemble it and ship it back home. I had it sent to a friend's house since I was driving back. These days WTC doesn't directly offer that service, but they let TBT do it. You can either do the Fully Assembled Bike service (their original), or Pack and Ship which is like what I did. See http://www.ironman.com/triathlon/events/americas/ironman/lake-placid/athletes/bike-services.aspx I've used TBT five times for Ironmans (IMAZ four times, and IM Los Cabos once). Great service, never a problem. |
