Subject: Bike Kit Input Needed
I'm going to get a bike repair kit. One that attaches to your bike so if I'm on a long ride or in a race, I can fix a flat and such. I've seen some kits that come with a bunch of tools.

What items are in your kit?

  • fold-up multiple wrench tool
  • spare tube(s)
  • CO2 canisters
  • combination pump/inflator

I keep everything but the tubes in my camelback, since I don't know which bike I might need them on.  The tubes, which are bike-specific, I keep in the under-seat bag.

For Training:
2 spare tubes
2-3 CO2 cartridges
2-3 tire levers
pump
phone
money

For Racing:
1 spare tube (2 if I'm not feeling lucky)
2 CO2 cartridges
2 tire levers

I don't bother with other tools becuase honestly...if something mechanical were to break...I couldn't fix it anyway.   But I know a lot of people who bring chain tools and stuff so they can improvise...

2 tubes, 2 CO2, tire levers, CO2 pump head (not sure what this is called, it's just the little fitting that goes between the CO2 and the fitting on the tube(, small folding multitool, tiny patch kit, a couple of moist towellettes to wipe the grease off my fingers after changing the flat.  I also have a small pump attached to my frame on the same braze-ons as my down-tube water bottle cage. 

I figure I can fix the first two flats with CO2, then as many more as I need to until I run out of patches.  I had a ride once with 6, count 'em 6 flats before the age of CO2.. I like to be prepared. 

Except for the pump, everything fits (tightly) in a small bag under my seat.  I could remove the pump and patch kits for racing if those extra ounces mattered to me,  but I don't think I'll ever ride iwthout the capacity to fix a flat tire.  I'd hate to have to cut a ride short because of something as simple as a flat.

 I have a small under seat tool bag and manage to cram into it:

3 tire levers, 1 spare tube, CO2 inflator and 2 refills, patch kit, folding multi-tool, rubber gloves, a 6''x6'' square piece of tyveck house wrap, and a 8 inch strip duct tape, $10 cash and I have a little room left over for my cell phone or 2 gels. I also carry a mini pump on my frame.

For racing, I simply put two tire levers and one spare inner tube in my middle back jersey pocket.  And I have a mini pump strapped across my bar with rubber bands.  So far, in three seasons, I have had to change only one flat in a race but I am glad that I had these.

Racing:

  • Spare tubular
  • 2 CO2 cartridges
For sprints, I don't carry tools/spares. Oly and longer I do.

I have a tool bag that is zip-topped and round, the same diameter as a water bottle. I use a cut off water bottle bottom to give it some reinforcement (so it doesn't wear through in a bottle cage). In that, I have:

* Multi-hex wrench. The folding kind. I have this wrapped in an old quarter-sock.
* Chain tool.
* Two Quick Sticks.
* Medical card.

I have a Blackburn Airstick on a bracket either by itself or by a water bottle, and two tubes in my jersey pockets.

For races, I ditch the bag and bungie (using sections of old inner tube to tie it on) a tube and the Quick Sticks into the saddle (between the rails and the saddle shell) and keep the pump on the frame.
