A few of us (Robin, Mel, Dean, me) are going to do a trail run at South Mountain on Friday morning.  We're meeting some other runners, so there will be runners of various speeds.

Meeting at 5:30 a.m.
48th Street and Guadalupe, Pima Canyon ramadas

Probably doing the Mormon Trail loop

After run, some of us will bike down to Chandler Blvd and maybe hit big Bertha depending on the time.

Feel free to join us!

The non-BT runner I'm going with said it's about 5.5 miles -- I'm not sure if that includes just the Mormon Loop, or the little bit of National Trail that you have to do to get to the Mormon Loop.  Of course, if you need to go longer, you can go as far as you want on National Trail -- I think that's the 15-mile trail (one way).

Note: Parking at Pima Canyon can get very congested. Carpooling is highly suggested; maybe some of us can meet at the Fry's parking lot on Baseline at  5:15 and carpool from there?

I didn't think we'd have so many people interested in the trail run to think about parking until now. This is GREAT!

I live about 10 minutes away on Ray. You can use our guestroom shower if you'd like.

Dean and I live at Broadway and McClintock. It's about 10 minutes east (depending on traffic). You'd be welcome to use our shower, and I can even make protein shakes for breakfast!

If a shower is open and perhaps even breakfast - count me in!!!! Of course I am the slowest of the bunch and have not really doen a "trail run" so I hope a few of you are hanging at the finish for a bit!

Just a warning - there will likely be parts of the Mormon Trail that are more suited for hiking than running, so don't count on your usual pace. But those areas should still keep your heart rate up!

Ok -so out of the people that are going I noticed that I do not have a contact number for any of you (unless Tanya shows as we used to keep the cool kid numbers on our live journal page).  If possible, can each of you PM your cell (I sometimes get lost and need you in my contact list anyway for drunk dialing!) so that I can zero in at 5:30 am if I can not find this park?

So is the plan to run up Pima Canyon, over to Mormon and back down National, or the other way around?

I'm planning to be there, but no carpool likely.

My understanding is that the trail that leads from the Pima Canyon ramadas is essentially an extension of the National Trail, although the SM trail map on the website is not always the clearest. But essentially yes, we've be going up the Pima Canyon "road" until it becomes National Trail, hook into Mormon Loop until it comes back to National Trail and go back to the cars on Pima. Those who want some extra distance can do a figure eight by returning to the Mormon Loop, then do Javalina Canyon and Beverly Canyon trails. That would add another 5K to the distance.

For those of you who have never been to this side of South Mountain before, finding the entrance can be tricky. If you're coming from Central Phoenix or the West Valley, here are some directions to help out:

1. Get off I-10 at Baseline and go west (right) for two very short blocks (i.e. through the Pointe Pkwy light to the next light).
2. Go south (left) at 48th street. Keep right at the 48th Street/Pointe Pkwy circle (yes, if you want to cut off a quarter mile of driving, you can take Pointe Pkwy to 48th Street, but it's confusing)
3. Take that around to Pima Canyon Road, just before Guadalupe. Pima Canyon will be on the right side. If you hit Guadalupe, you've gone too far.

See you all tomorrow!

Great. Thanks.

I think it's easier to go up Mormon and down National, but ok.

I ran this side of SM for a few years when I worked right there. There are all sorts
of routes you can do.

I have a bunch of trail maps online.

So lesson 1 - don't trust Kim's directions. Ask DEAN!

Sorry for posting directions that lead to a gated community. You USED to be able to go straight down 48th Street!

Wonderful run. We plan to do South Mtn trail run again next Friday, same time, same place, slightly different trails, (NEW directions, for those who haven't been there yet). We may make this a weekly run since there are so many different trails at South Mountain to run!

Also, here are some pics (assuming the links work):

Kind of like Tour de Foenix when we saw some horse-man pulling a huge pace line... it was travis, the rogue rider. LOL

And then Josh asked me when we got home "Did Travis pull you at all" and I said "You know what, he didn't" and then I decided I did not like Travis anymore.

The End.
