I might Volunteer....paying 95 bucks for an Olympic distance race is ....Ridiculous! IMHO

Edited to add: Is it just me, or did the prices of all races go up this year, I noticed that there is sprints for 90 bucks. I guess it was just a matter of time before the tri scene went into a money making buisness as with everything else. I am finding it more and more expensive just to race. I can see 195 bucks for a 6-8 hour event half Iron and even more for an Ironman, but to charge that much for a sprint is outrageous! Most likely it will get even worse. Something has to be done. I am emailing Tribc!

Year after year race fees have been on the rise. For cycling too.

I do a tri just for fun, but the prices are beyond fun.

I've talked to two people from last year who said the water was absolutely freezing even with the wetsuit and judging by our cool weather so far I am betting it will be too cold for me. I'm opting for a half marathon the following weekend in Penticton instead which gets me up to ride the Penticton oly route as well. win, win. I might gather the family together and come spectate out at Cultus for a while( Mother's day so my say goes), hit the ice cream shops ~ good luck.

Based on other events, $95 is within range. Vancouver Tri $89, Gerick's Wasa Tri $100, Peach Tri $85, Self-Transcendence Tri $65.

Due to the fixed costs involved, I expect smaller races charge more, last year there were only 153 finishers. I estimate they have less than $20,000 to plan the event with, buy the medals, rent tables, fencing for transition area, hire life guards, make signs for the roads, drinks for drink stations, food for post race meal, t-shirts, rent space, etc.

So if you have say a 95 dollar burger and the same burger offered by a differnt store for 65 dollars....you would pay the 95 dollars for the burger because it has extra mustard????

Just out of curiosity, have you done this race? If so, you think it's not worth $95 because?

I think your analogy should be:

There are four stores selling burgers for around $95 each. However, there is one store that is selling their burger for $65. So you write a letter to the Department of Beef that the other stores are charging too much money.

I'm not saying you shouldn't write and ask about it, I also want to know their response. I'm just saying based on other triathlons it seems reasonable, or at least what a majority of people are willing to pay. It isn't like there is a triathlon monopoly out there.

I would ask a race director what the typical costs involved are, and how they set the entry fees. I am not in a position to say $65 is cheap or $95 is expensive, but I do know that organizing events burns through money like crazy.

Well, I never went into there blind folded, I emailed them and stated that price of most...not all triathlons in the sprint and olympic distance seem to be getting more expensive every year. This hinders the growth of the sport to people. I really don't have a problem but I have a goodjob and a small mortgage. Say I was not so lucky I would not really be able to race as much as I would like. I simply suggested that they put a cap on the price of each distance. This would allow more people to do more races and attract new youth and individuals to actually pump more money into tribc. I do believe I seen an 89 dollar sprint out there. As for a monopoly, I do believe they do have one. I have only seen a handful of races not sanctioned by TRIBC. I am curious to the response as well.

As for the question of the race. No, never have, I tried to swim in Cultus once in May.

Course seems nice and it I can attest to the race directors organization. If you want a good race, it will be one.

I am doing this race. It will be my first oly distance. I totaly agree that the price is high. when i only get about 300-400 a pay check, thats like a third of my check. Its pretty harsh.

Same here, I thought of doing this race but my hands and feet turn white in 70 deg water so the idea of getting a lake in early may just doesn't appeal to me at all.

I did this race last year and I froze my feet....when they started thawing 1/2way through the run, it was like running on pins and needles - not fun!! However, I loved the whole race experience last year and the course was awesome I'm doing it again!!

I don't own a car, so I am planning on how to get there.

Option 1) ride share
If anyone is going to this event wants to split gas money, and has room for an extra bike, let me know.

Option 2) rent a car
If anyone is also looking for a ride (leaving from downtown Vancouver), then I can rent a car for the day.

Option 1 or option 2, whatever works. Option 2 is more so I can split the cost of getting there.

Without having done the course, it's hard to say. It looks flat, so it should be fast. Also, the swim is only 1000 meters.

If you go to the website, you can see the results to get an idea of what kind of times you can expect. Based on last year's results, a 2:30 would put you at 71 of 153.

Yeah, the distances were off last year, I think the swim was around 1250-1300, bike was close and the run was maybe 9k-ish. I did last year's in 2:13, with a shorter swim...who knows, too early to decide!

I care about the results. I am planning on winning everything. First I will race the Olympic distance then jump back into the lake and do the Sprint. Finishing FIRST overall in both events!! Then I'm going to ride my bike all the way back to Vancouver from the finish...with the extra weight of the medals around my neck...with only one leg...because I am literaly THAT good.

Don't forget, you'll have to have your sex change operation between races in order to win the female side :)
