Subject: Tsunami Tragedy....
Spending a lazy day yesterday....it was a no-shower-in-our-sweats-day for me and my son to play with xmas toys and read the Sunday papers. Logged online about 4pm and read about the Tsunami....the pictures and stories are horrifying...I had to stop looking....the babies and children that were killed...the numbers stagger me...the devastation....

My sister boarded a plane from SFO with her BF yesterday morning to head to Thailand for a 3 week vacation they've been planning for over a year...most of their stops...in the most devastated areas hit such as Phuket and further south.....they didn't know when they boarded the plane what they were heading into.

She left me her itinerary...but I called and she had cancelled her hotel reservation....I know she's okay...both her and her BF are experienced world travelers but it suddenly hits close to home....suddenly the tragedy had a personal face on it for me.

I'm now working my way from "worried older sister" to soon to be "dammit you better have a goooood explanation for not checking in with us!" stage... .

The really scary part hit me today....talking to a friend who said, "Thank goodness they weren't there a day earlier" and then I realized, that she was supposed to be there a day earlier, in Phuket. Their plans for Thailand are pretty much in her words "we're going to lay on the beach and do *nothing*".....but I bitched and moaned and whined at her for not being with me and my son for Xmas and she caved and pushed her reservations back....

I don't know why it is, but my perception of the coverage on all the major sites is a lot of gory coverage of the death, of the bodies, of the gut-wrenching, can't-breathe sorrow these families are going thru....the UN is estimating that almost 1/3 of the victims are children...children. I know the above statement sounds completely naive b/c this is a massive tragedy...but I've worked in media for 10 years now and spend most days examining how the media work....is this an example of how conditioned we've become to the death and gore that's out there? *Am* I being naive? After having the beheading of Nick Berg played across the Internet, seeing the pictures of the burned and dismembered bodies of contractors hanging from bridges splashed across the front pages of newspapers across the country while we drink our morning coffee have we become so immune to reading about the tossed bodies of unclaimed children hanging from barbed wire fences and seeing picture after picture of the dead that we need to elevate it to higher and more extreme images in order it to elicit a response? Would we have seen images like this a couple years ago?

A mixture of emotions rocking thru me right now. First, that my sister and her boyfriend are safe which I'm sure they are, second for the families and the loss, for the devastation to the cities and towns and countries and the far reaching affects of this down the road...a generation decimated, plague and disease soon to ravage these countries.....and here I sit, in my home with heat, electricity, a beautiful son, a bounty of gifts, a good job, great friends, safe, secure and sound....

My cousin and his wife go to Phuket for two weeks every year during the holidays, and they're there now. I spoke to another cousin yesterday to see if she had heard from them, and she had. Apparently they on the beach when the whole thing happened. My cousin heard somebody yelling for everyone to get off the beach and they ran like hell. It just missed them by seconds.

And to answer your other question about the media: Yes, we have been conditioned to see such images. I think there are a couple of reasons for it. On one hand you have the "competition," if you will, between different media to provide "cutting edge" stories and images. You can only show so much running around and shooting in the streets before it gets old. Therefore, you need to take it up a notch to keep it interesting. Does it bother me? No. Do I like it? No. Can I accept it? Yes. It's out there, it's happening, it's reality.

Which brings me to the second reason: It is reality. Look at programming these days. What percentage, do you suppose, of TV shows are "reality" shows? It evokes emotion, to a degree, before people are numbed to it. It makes people feel better about themsleves that they don't have to live that life. It angers people by fueling the "Why are we fighting this war?" fire, and inspires them to take action/voice their opinion.

OK, I'll stop now as I could go on for days on my soap box about any number of things, but I think you get my point. I hope your sister and her boyfriend are OK. I can appreciate how you feel not knowing what's happening. That was my whole morning yesterday. Best wishes!!!!

I hope you have heard from your sister by now... I'm sure she and her bf are fine, but it's still comforting to hear the voice.

My ex-husband and his wife are in Sri Lanka right now, and arrived the day before the tsunami. He and I do not get along very well anymore, but he is still the father of my kids, and it was still good to hear that he was ok. I can only imagine how relieved you will be to hear from your sister. Hugs to you.

Sis is fine....She called at dark thirty this morning (3:30 am).....they got held over in Tokyo for almost a day for...get this....plane trouble.....there's a sort of really sick, dark humor to that, dontcha thinki?

anyway, they're in bangkock now, trying to figure out what to do....obviously they're not heading south.....

yes, i agree with Kupe Du Monde....that we've become conditioned to it....that each and every time it has to be a bit more in order to keep our attention span...Maybe I'm applying bad critical thinking and logic here (think my professor called it a slippery slope) but where will it end? will it end? broadcasting executions on live tv? (which depending on your stance on the death penalty you would either buy into or not)...but you get my point.

It's not anything I'm upset or angry about, but one of those thoughts that I think about....that I'm aware of, that I obviously observe around me and like to get others feedback on from time to time.

I'm glad both of your families are safe....

crpadiem - 2004-12-27 8:29 PM  seeing the pictures of the burned and dismembered bodies of contractors hanging from bridges splashed across the front pages of newspapers

When I saw those photos, I promptly went and threw up. I think the media takes it waaaay to far. It's amazing how much more graphic the violence can be on TV than sexual content (not endorsing more sexual content, rather less violence).

As for the Tsunami, I am so glad to hear that you guys' families/friends are ok. What a horrible tragedy, it's impossible to wrap your mind around those numbers...... Can't even think of what to say....

Thank goodness for pushy sisters!
This is a six degrees of separation thread with a regrettable core, but reminds us how we are all connected. My thoughts are with you all with connections to this Asian disaster.
My husband usually refuses to watch the news here - it is poison for the mind to only dwell on the negative aspects of the world.

Now is the time to give aide - I am wondering about the best aide and relief agencies to donate to. I have seen and heard of well meaning but unwise international aid to disaster areas. After the Lima Peru earthquake, everyone sent food. The earthquake, while devastating to the city, had not affected the countryside and the farming. The western world sends tonnes of food, which devestated the farmers..... canola oil with the lable "donated by the canola farmers of Canada" could be found in the market in the middle of palm oil plantations in Cote d'Ivoire (when they were hosting Liberian refugees - what a switch now!).

Haven't checked in all morning because I've been working on getting communication to our sponsors about the tsunami tragedy. Sadly, one of our children was killed in India and who knows how many of them are homeless. If you can please find a relief organization you trust give whatever you can. The effect of this natural disaster will be here for years to come. Millions of people are homeless and are facing threats from infectious diseases due to the lack of sanitation in these developing countries. Millions of people in these coastal towns are poor and survive on about $1 a day. I don't know your proclivity for giving to global relief efforts but if you've never given before please give now. If you want more information PM me.

God Bless.

Ovetta.

Here are some practical ideas on world relief:

World Visison does an outstanding job - www.worldvision.org

Compassion International (I work for them) - also does a fantastic job of responding to need because we have in-country staff who tell us exactly what they need. We use money to buy those materials only.

i hope everyone's family has checked in and is safe and sound.

a friend of mine with family in the area forwarded me this link for those wishing to contribute:

global peace now needs donations for fuel to bring food and medical supplies to those who have survived this natural disaster. 100% of donated funds will be used to aid south asia.
