Subject: Got hit by a car today

I was 66 miles into my ride today and heading south. I came up on an small side road and I saw a white Cadillac Deville coming from the east. They had a stop sign and I did not. As I got closer to the intersection it became obvious that they were going to run the stop sign. I veered toward the west but I was cruising at about 18 mph and she was going too fast. She t-boned me. I landed about 50' to the west. I'm not sure if I lost consciousness or not. My left leg was hurting something fierce and I was in a daze.

The driver of the Deville stopped and so did a couple of other cars. Someone called an ambulance and the paramedics showed up before the ambulance. I had my cell phone and called my wife and she and my son arrived about the time they were loading me in the ambulance. In the emergency room they hooked up an IV and gave me some more morphine as the little bit they'd given me in the ambulance had no effect. I was very thirty having just ridden 66 miles but they said I could not have anything until they did x-rays and catscan so see if they were gonna have to operate. I've broken my leg before but it did not hurt anywhere near this bad so I was certain my leg was broken and/or my ankle was crushed. The left side or me took the full blow of the car.

They eventually got around to the x-rays and cat scan and concluded there was nothing broken except a fracture of my nose...which doesn't even hurt so I question that diagnosis. My ankle is swelling up and I guess after the morphine starts to wear off I'll be in considerable pain. They gave me a prescription for Lortab for pain and an anti-inflammatory. They also prescribed an ortho-boot and knee splint and referred me to an ortho doc for follow-up in three days.

The police made it to the scene and got the info on the driver. Hopefully her insurance is valid. It's the law in Alabama that you have to have insurance but the cop said people will get insurance to get the insurance card and then cancel the insurance. I'm not too worried about the medical bills as I have medical coverage but my bike is totaled and that's a $2,700 bike. The bike is only about a month old. I will also have to replace my helmet which is cracked in two place so it did its job! My bike computer cable was ripped apart when the forks flew off.

The good news is, nothing is broken. My ironman race is the end of August so hopefully I can recover enough by then to still do the race.

I had my daughter bring the camera to the hospital to take some pictures. Looking at the pictures now I can't believe how fortunate I was! I could very easily have been run completely over. God was looking out for me...He always does. :-)

~Mike

I hate seeing these threads.  I'm glad that you were not hurt more.  It sounds like it could have been a lot worse.  Hope you heal up so you can get back to IM training.  At least she stopped, so hopefully you will get a new bike from her insurance company.

HOLY #%@.. Man, I am glad you're ok! Those are just scratches considering you were t-boned bya Cadi....! yah, the bike looks like it is going to need a little more than a 100mph tape to fix. I hope you get everything on track for Louisville... You have a lot of BT'rs to meet there.

take care..
Kenny

YOU are one lucky BT'er!!  I am totally surprised that nothing worse came out of this.  This scares me since I almost had the same incident a few weeks ago.

I'm sure we are all very happy to hear that you are doing relatively well.

Take care and heal quickly!

I can stand hearing about incidents like this. Every time I am out on the road I fear getting hit from behind or someone doing the same thing that happened to you here. God was truly looking out for you bro. I wish you a speedy recovery and good luck with you IM.

Like most, this is the biggest thing that worried me about getting into road biking.
(I hit a car on my bike as a kid, luckily I was not hurt.)

I'm just glad you are ok, and not hurt worse. You are very lucky.
Wishing you a speedy recovery and good luck with the race!

Holy cr@p! I'm glad you're OK - and judging by the 3rd picture down, the helmet really did help keep your skull intact! (I would replace it with the same model!) That's amazing that you didn't get more seriously hurt.  Hopefully you will be able to get back in the saddle again soon.

i'm very sorry to hear about this, it's scary how many cyclists run into trouble with cars. i've very happy to hear that the injuries appear to be (mostly) minor, and i hope the insurance buys you a new bike with some zipps, and some other cool new gear!

Glad you're basically OK.

Your story brought back chills to me.  Almost the exact same thing happened to my wife about 12 years ago.  She ended up with a broken elbow and cheek and two surgeries, so you are a lucky man.  The helmet saved her as well.

Any rate, not to sidetrack your story and thread.  Really glad you're just banged up.  God was good to you.

I sincerely hope you have a quick and thorough recovery. As a fellow member of 'Team Felt', I feel for the bike but I know it can easily be replaced. Hope the mental and emotional side of things are okay also. Don't know how I'd be in a similar situation.
