I mean this in a sincere way...

I am just curious what makes a 'good Dawg?"  All the UGA fans are going around saying that UGA VI was a great dawg...but I really don't know what that means.

When War Eagle VI died in 06, I never thought "wow,  that was a great bird." It never crossed my mind.  Sure, I was sympathetic but it ended there.

I guess it would be different, IMO, if UGA VI was the original or was revolutionary in some sorts.  Otherwise, he will be replaced nearly as quick as he is forgotten.

We only have one mascot so we focus on him. It's harded to get excited about a bird when he is only one of three for the school.

I think his daddy was deemed to be a good dawg after this:

We have three?  Tiger--1;  Eagle-2.  Did they teach you how to count at UGA?

Your original mascot is the "plainsmen".
Don't they teach history at that agricultural college?

The Plainsman is the newspaper.  When did UGA update its history books?  Oh yeah, they don't know how to read up there.

And who are YOU calling an agricultural college?

Apparently they don't teach spelling there either. I guess more than one mascot or battle cry can be confusing for those that only had to fill in their name correctly on the application to be accepted.

I hate to break it to you, but you are wrong as well.....the term "plainsmen" refers to the students who attend Auburn......The term "war eagle" is the battle cry for the sports teams and the Tiger is the mascot.

In 2007, Uga VI became the winningest mascot in school history and currently owns a record of 87-27. The mark surpassed Uga IV who ended his career with a record of 77-24-4. A changing of the guard occurred in 1999 when Uga V officially retired during pregame ceremonies at the Georgia-South Carolina game and handed the mascot duties over to his son, Uga VI. Uga VI, who was only one year old at the time of his coronation, is the biggest of all the mascots weighing in at 65 pounds — more than 20 pounds heavier than his father — and like his forefathers is a solid white English bulldog. His registered name is "Uga V's Whatchagot Loran?" But he has two things to his credit that his famous father, Uga V, never experienced — two SEC championships (2002 and 2005), in addition to two BCS bowl wins.

God rest his soul :(

Uga VI's jersey and collar rest on top of his crate. The body of the dog, whose registered name was Uga V's Whatchagot Loran, was interred Monday in the granite and marble mausoleum where Uga's five predecessors are buried inside Stanford Stadium. Uga VI died Friday.

I get all this.  But I still think it is really silly to talk about a dog as if it had anything to do with the success of the football team.

My point is, when was the last time someone said, I disagree.  UGA IV.  Now THAT was a dog!!!

(this of course is all tongue and cheek

The point is that everyone normal loves dogs and babies.  When was the last time anyone called the eagle Man's Best Friend?

I get it and I'm not even a UGA grad.

You are right.  An overweight slobbering dog is SOOOO much more endearing than the symbol of our nation

Is it football season yet?

Since when did we change the symbol of our nation to a buzzard?

brown_dog_us - 2008-07-01 1:13 PM I thought it was a war chicken.

No loyalty to either side here but the story of how Auburn came to incorporate the eagle as a mascot is much more interesting than Georgia's. I would much rather say my mascot was chosen because he survived a Civil War battle, was nursed back to health, then flew the entire game of the first SEC game (against Georgia), helped inspire the team to defeat Georgia rather than say my mascot was chosen because a random journalist for the Atlanta Journal just started calling us the bulldogs. Not nearly as cool or as inspiring. Just saying...
