I am still debating about doing the race. I will see how I feel after the Chisago half tomorrow.

Is the bike course pretty fast?

I rode party of the course in the last week or so. I went from Como Lake along Wheelock almost all the way to Phalen. There are some hills to contend with, so unless you are a good climber/descender I don't think I would call it a fast course. That being said, I liked the bit that I did ride. I will definitely be going and riding the whole course one of these days.

I'm doing the Olympic as well....

Anyone know what the water temp is like? Trying to figure out if I should expect to use the wetsuit or not.

I'll be there sucking my way through the olympic.

I did this race last year as my first full oly. I wouldn't call the bike course fast, no. It's not slow either though; just your average bike course. As for water temp, I don't remember it being remarkably warm or cold last year...all I remember for sure is that it was wetsuit legal.

I'm in for the sprint - Clydesdale division yeah!

Has anybody checked on Phalen, lately?  Are we going to be green coming out of the water?

Any other clydesdales here entered?

This'll be my first race that I'll be comfortable on my tri bike, the super-special closeout Javelin Varese for $550 (man, I love a good deal).   I did Buffalo on it, but was sitting up about 70% of the race because I had very little time to practice/tune my bike.  I'll be in the aerobars 90% of the race this time.

I swam in Phalen about two weeks ago, though only in the swimming area. There were some weeds, but it didn't seem that bad - only slightly weedier than Lake Harriet. Temperature-wise, it was pretty comfortable in the late afternoon. I suppose it would probably be wetsuit-legal, but I don't think it would be necessary at all.

The one thing I would mention for the spring racers is that you actually pass by the transition area and do a partial lap around the lake and then come back to the transition.  I un-shoed myself early last year and had to put my feet back in!?!?!

This is not a USAT race and I am pretty sure that you'll be able to wear a wetsuit.  I doubt anyone's taking the water temp at this one.

Hey guys! Tell me about the bike course.  Hills?  Flat?  Similar to...  Just for reference, I thought Minneman was pancake flat and HOTL was fairly flat.  Rochester was kind of hilly.  Treadman Du has one *big hill* and a few normal hills.  TIA!

I would call it rolling. As you go west away from the lake on Wheelock, you go down a decent hill across 35E and a ways past. None of the hill is steep, but it goes for a while. After you cross Rice St. (maybe) it climbs back up. This hill is shorter and steeper and has a couple sharp turns in it - not quite hair-pin turns, but also not gentle enough to let you totally put the hammer down on the descent. From the top of that hill it is fairly flat all the way to Como Lake.

I didn't see a route posted on the website, so I don't know if we go around the lake or what, but somewhere over there we turn around and go back. This will be the hilliest course I've done (compared to Chain of Lakes, Gustavus, Average Jo, and Brewhouse).

Yes, the St. Croix valley tri - I saw a guy clipped in to his pedals fall over because he couldn't keep forward momentum. The sprint hill is long and fairly steep in parts. I looked at a relief map of the area once and it was something like 375 feet of vertical rise.

Going back down is fun.

Does anyone know what the bike and run routes are? It would be nice to look them over completely before the race.

Has anyone seen anything about packet pickups or just general race-day details? I don't think I've heard much on this one since I gave my credit card info to Active...

I didn't see a map with a route, was I not looking in the right place? All I saw was a single point.
