Member 22 | Subject: The couch potato to Ironman challenge! I've been told I'm mad and have no chance, but hey what more motivation do I need than the impossible. Anybody interested in a five year challenge? It's my intention to train from worlds best couch potato to Ironman within 5 years. I've got the ball rolling my buying some decent running shoes today and also enrolling for the Nantwich sprint triathlon this September. So, join me on the impossible! The couch potato to Ironman challenge! Anybody interested? Paul |

Extreme Veteran 315 South Jordan UT | Subject: RE: The couch potato to Ironman challenge! I've actually done this! A little over five years ago, I was a couch potato. Last fall I ran my first Ironman. It was great! You can soooo do this. It takes a ton of discipline, but it is very worth it. What ironman are you setting your sights on? |

Champion 5312 Calgary | Subject: RE: The couch potato to Ironman challenge! Ha, THEY probably would say that about anyone trying to do an ironman. Doubt you will find any naysayers around here. 18 months ago I was 250lbs and couldn't run 2 minutes. Did a half ironman on June 21 this year. For myself, a 5 year challenge would be too long, leave too many opportunities to procrastinate, but if the time line works for you and you can stay on task you will be successful. |

Master 1397 Granvile, Ohio | Subject: RE: The couch potato to Ironman challenge! What a great challenge Paul! No question you can do it. Pick an Ironman and annual goals that will move your closer to the goal. I'm about 3 years into mine right now. IMKY in 2010. I've gone from not knowing how the heck I'll get through a sprint distance to feeling comfortable taking on a HIM. I don't know if you ever get comfortable with the thought of the full ironman. You have the desire and determination, you do the training, and you take the plunge. Now get off that couch and lace up those shoes! |

Expert 784 Computerland | Subject: RE: The couch potato to Ironman challenge! Good luck on your challenge! 5 years is definitely a good time frame to make that goal. I know you can do it I have sort of the same goal too. I was never very athletic either. When I first started running, I considered it a huge accomplishment to run a mile. I have been in the sport of triathlon for one year now though and am going for my first olympic distance triathlon at the end of this month. I hope to finish an ironman in 2010. If me, the one always picked last in gym that can barely catch a ball, has this same goal, then for sure you will be able to achieve your dreams |

Member 37 Oldsmar, FL | Subject: RE: The couch potato to Ironman challenge! yeah, the more I think about it .... I am still in the "baby steps" category --- I am eyeing a super-sprint in april '09 but I am VERY undaunted by the distance and am planning to use it as a springboard to a sprint in the following weeks (gotta pop my tri cherry first!) maybe I will re-set my personal goals after the first sprint tri? who knows ... this is virgin territory to me at this point |

Member 22 | Subject: RE: The couch potato to Ironman challenge! Guys and Gals Just got back off a 30 min run/walk! Well it's a start eh! I've got myself organised to; a- Not fail! and b- Make some money for the NSPCC. I've asked the Liverpool John Moores University if they fancy analysing me during the journey over the next five years. I have also started to ask my business contacts for a sponsorship deal and fingers crossed on that score. In addition, I'm sending out an email to all my business contacts, friends and collegues; to see if they fancy commiting to spoinsoring me in at least one event per year for the NSPCC (Abused Kids charity). In return I'll send everyone involved a weekly email, and create a webiste to get people into exercise and make some money for charity. First small steps but I'm really excited. As buzz lightyear said......'Onwards and upwards. If anyone is interested in joining the weekly update club, then just drop me your email address and I will add you to the growing database. Paul x |

Elite 3489 Lakewood, CO | Subject: RE: The couch potato to Ironman challenge! I will echo that it is so doable. I did the journey in 4 years (although I might have been more of an "active couch potato". Came back from a vacation in 2003 at 247 and did not want to see 250. Did my first sprint a year later. Sprint an Oly in 05, Sprint, Oly and HIM in 06. And 2 sprints, 2 Oly's a HIM and IMFL in 2007. It was and is a journery well worth undertaking. |

Veteran 150 | Subject: RE: The couch potato to Ironman challenge! Add me to your list, I would love to hear how you're doing. I will join you starting early next year. It was my goal to get started this year, but baby number #3 will be coming along in February. I am working on my swmimming right now and will contuinue through out my pregnancy. It's my weakest part. Soooo......I am thinking a full iron in late 2013 or early 2014. I want to get in killer shape and am trying not to get too big during this pregnancy. I'm still training and hoping that will keep me in some sort of shape to get back to it next year. I'm sure you'll do it!!! |

Extreme Veteran 377 Western, Mass | Subject: RE: The couch potato to Ironman challenge! I'll join your challenge, but I plan to do my first IM in 2012, Lake Placid. It will be tough(duh), but i need to improve myself and feel better about myself. I did me first sprint, almost DFL, but i finished, it was fun. My race plans are: 2009 - 2 sprints, 1 oly 2010 - 2 sprints, 2 olys 2011 - 2 sprints, 1 oly, 1 HIM 2012 - 2 sprints, 1 oly, 1IM After that, the sky's the limit. The hardest part for me is just being happy with the little victories, and taking things one day ata time. Kevin Edited by KML 2008-08-31 5:25 AM |

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: The couch potato to Ironman challenge! You can add me to the list of newbs. I got off my couch in like 10/07 I think it was. In any case, did a sprint in 12/07, a half mary in 5/08 and an Oly in 7/08. I currently have issues with no indoor pool for the winter within 150 miles of my house, but am working on that. So Fall 2007 to Fall 2012... would be the timeframe I guess. Hope the body holds up.... I have no idea where I would do the IM, but not somewhere tooo hot. Anything 95 + F drains me big time. |

Master 1790 | Subject: RE: The couch potato to Ironman challenge! Cool challenge -- I've set 3 years for me. I'd like to do either IMAZ or Lake Placid in 2011. So that puts me doing an Oly in 2009, and a HIM in 2000. I did my first super sprint in 2004, but I kinda have this tendency to quit exercising. Here's to keeping the momentum going! |
