Subject: Rebounding after bad workouts?

So, I've had an incredible summer of training and have felt really good on most of my rides.  I'm not running right now due to injury and swimming hasn't been a huge amount but it's gone okay. I did an organized mountain bike ride at the end of June and a bike-swim-bike duathlon a couple of weeks ago.  Last Saturday I rode my first half century ride and felt great.  Due to scheduling issues with visiting parents I wasn't able to get out again until Thursday.  I got on the bike and nothing felt right.  Nothing horrible it just didn't feel right.  Then the creepy guy appeared on the trail making remarks to me, who apparently is his sweetie.  Surprised  I ended up calling the ride short at 14 miles.  I figured it was just one off day.  More scheduling/weather issues meant that I couldn't ride again until Sunday when I met up with my coach for a group ride.  Again, it just felt horrible.  This time my left quad and hamstring were cramping, especially when climbing starting a couple miles in and while I hung in for a total of 25 miles I'd hoped to do quite a bit more.  I'm hoping to do a the 70 mile distance for a ride in early September but at this rate I'm not sure I'll be ready.  So, any thoughts on how to get my groove back or what might be causing the funk?

I'm doing a swim workout today to hopefully loosen my leg up and get a workout in that doesn't feel so horrible (or if it does it's normal because I'm not a swimmer naturally).

Oh, yes, definitely, I'm sure there will be lots of varied opinions as triathlons/cycling/working out etc are just not exact sciences.  If they were it would be easy right?  But, I figured getting some input would be good.  I definitely want my workouts to be more regular and they will be for the foreseeable future.  Swim tonight, weekly group ride tomorrow, swim Wednesday, ride Thursday, Saturday and Sunday are all on tap this week.  Hopefully, you're right, it was just weirdness from too much time off.

Yeah, unfortunately the next day I was volunteering for 6 hours at Tri for the Cure and then it was way too hot to ride after that.  Thankfully it has cooled off here a bit making it easier to train in the afternoons as long as the afternoon storms hold off.

Some days you eat the bear, some days he eats you. You'll have high points and low points in training. For me, It's best to aknowledge the sucky days, but don't dwell on them. Keep the high points in your mind, let the crappy days fall away.

Thanks for the thoughts and encouragement guys.  I really had moved past the bad ride Thursday so I was surprised to have a second on on Sunday.  I swam tonight and it went pretty well.  Not quite as long as I'd hoped but the pool was full and I was swimming circles with 2 other people one of whom was seriously slow.  And I'm no speed demon.  But the swim felt pretty decent and I got some good stretching in at the end so hopefully that helps with the cramping.  I've got my weekly group ride on tap tomorrow so that should be better.

ETA: I had another pick me up tonight as well. I got home to an envelope in the mail from my dad.  He sent me Joe Friel's The Triathlete's Training Bible which I'm super stoked to dig into.  :D

My first tri is this weekend, but I've been running for (holy cr$p) 32 years.  I've noticed that some days when I thought I would have a really good workout, I ended up with a horrible workout.  I've had the opposite when I felt really lousy and ended up having a great workout.  Bad workouts are not the end of the world.

The answer is beer.

Just relax, have a nice, cold beer after a bad workout and hit it again the next day.
