Red Rover? Tag? Ghost in the Graveyard? Let's go beyond the thrill of chilhood backyard compention. When does Poker get added? Billiards? Perhaps Nascar can capitalize on their popularity and get in. Seriously, how does this stuff happen? How do they decide these things? |

They already have ladies running around in skimpy bikinis, this would be the logical evolution from that. |

Yes it is getting the boot. The word I've read in papers, etc. is that it doesn't have enough "international appeal"....and so I ask the same thing asked in this thread, and trampoline does? I do think it is because we have dominated it and won Gold every year...but other teams are out there and compete--Japan, Austraila, and China do well every year. And yes, we're dominating again this year, having won every game and only given up 2 runs total...to include Cat Osterman pitching a no-hitter against likely silver medalists Austraila. Some say it was linked to baseball going (cause it's done too) and maybe cause the MLB didn't suspend some of the season to release players--but while they are a similiar sport, they are not going for the MLB reason. I'm sad. I am a softball fan. How trampoline, air rifle, and ping pong out due a sport like softball is beyond me... |

They are big on baseball! Apparently slalom kayaking has a lot of "international appeal". If it's about the U.S. dominating the game, then diving/gymnastics etc that are dominated by a the same 1 or 2 countries should go, too. Speaking of baseball/softball... is cricket in the olympics? rugby? |

Champion 26509 Sydney | Subject: RE: Trampoline??? Rugby Sevens is in the commonwealth games... would work really well as an olympics sport as the games are SO much quicker and teams are used to packing up for several matches in one day so it could easily be squeezed into just a couple of days! Cycling has lost various track distances and disciplines recently as well which is just silly... usually in favour of adding another swim distance! (thats what it felt like there for awhile anyway)

That and the fact that they won't suspend the season, thus freeing the best players like Ichiro or Pujols to play. I think the fact that MLB organized the World Baseball Classic but won't make any concessions for the Olympics really, really, really ticked them off. Softball got the raw end of the deal, getting lumped in as "female baseball" in much the same way all the other sports are separated by gender. |

I didnt even realise it WAS an olympic sport... (in fact I didnt realise it was played much out of the USA!) It is HUGE in Japan, the Dominican, Mexico, and some Latin American countries. It is THE sport in Cuba, too. Interesting thing about Cuban baseball. While they win a lot of international competions, they are actually doing so without their best players. They won't send the "stars" of the country because they are afraid they will defect and not get on the plane back to Cuba. |

Softball needed a majority vote by members of the IOC to stay in the games, and since it's been dominated by the US and a couple of other countries, it's not a sport with too many "friends" in the IOC who would want to vote in favor of it. Softball's been in the Olympics three times, and only four countries have won medals. |
