Wow

Another egotistical, self indulging celebrity. I'm sure every word out of her mouth was so GD thought provoking. I didn't see the interview so I'm just assuming this is how it went since she's part of the celebrity population that likes the sound of their own voice.

Sorry, I hate 98% of celebrities and she's near the top of my sh#t list.

Good for her, if she for some reason inspires somebody to improve themselves through triathlon then it's a good thing.

First, good for her for giving it a go. We all know it's fun, establishes good healthy habits, and is a great challenge.

However, I don't think I would want to be in a race she was in - I have a feeling it would be a bit of a media circus and more of a madhouse than a tri already is.

That was the interviewer, not her. As others have mentioned before, triathlon is still a small and fairly unknown sport in the grand scheme of things.

Foot in mouth

Wow, that "babies!!" sentance doesn't do much for the women's movement. I'd be sort of insulted by that if I was a woman athlete. Wait, I'm over it. That was fast.

Yeah - a little self-indulgent. She has just started her "training blog." It starts with her spending time with celeb trainer, Gunnar Peterson...

And that race will be my first...is it wrong that my new goal is whooping her? lol  That is horrible.  I repent. (not really)

There have already been at least 2 threads (awhile back) about whether or not J'Lo is cool for doing a tri. How about we leave it alone and just say "hey, great job for doing a triathlon!" We do that for tons of people on here every day. She's a celeb - so what?

Hmmm, for some crazy reason, I can see myself sandbagging. Not outright, just enough, to say...spend the whole race right behind her. Just to critique her form and cadence. Seriously...why else would I sandbag???

Besides being tremendous pace-booty, I found the interview very positive for the sport.  Great key messages:

  1. start slow and build
  2. make time to fit it into your schedule
  3. swim is a major challenge, but start by getting comfortable in the water
  4. bike fit is important to avoid pain/injury and do well
  5. "even if I have to crawl, I'm going to finish"
  6. raising money for a good cause

Bravo J-LO

Just listened to it, I was spot on!

She makes me want to vomit.

So according to the trainer she's so inspiring because she's a celebrity and she's training for a triathlon. You know, that must really be hard having a top of the line coach and a personal chef helping you to train. Not to mention SHE DOESN'T HAVE ANYTHING ELSE TO DO.

as in the other thread, why all the hate?  she's just trying to get in shape after having a couple kids, and looks like she's using her celebrity to raise more $$ for the charity benefitted by the malibu tri.  SOunds like she's got the same doubts we all did coming in or going to a new distance.

i hope she does well.

I just watched the piece and I don't think she came off as egotistical - I think she came across as terrific! She is SIX MONTHS post partum with TWINS and training for a tri that she is doing next month - 7 months postpartum!!!! WOW!!!!

that is very inspiring.

and yeah if she can get others to start triing well hats off to her!

I don't think the nautica malibu tri will be much more of a circus with J.Lo than it already is.

The David Duchovny John Cryer rivalry will probably get more attention.

JOHN CRYER 00:18:33 11 00:03:19 00:54:59 6 19.6 00:01:47 00:33:04 5 00:08:16 01:51:44
DAVID DUCHOVNY 00:14:21 3 00:03:28 00:57:29 10 18.7 00:02:10 00:35:55 10 00:08:58 01:53:24

Or the Desperate Housewives or the Dodgeball Relay Teams.

You can even pay more money to have a pre-race dinner with the celebrities. So I don't think that J.Lo will add too much circus to it.

I have to agree.  She did a good job with the interview and raised some good points for beginners.  Maybe she'll be an inspiration for other moms to get them involved in a sport after they have children.

Why all the hate and bad attitudes towards her?  I don't see her as being any different than any other beginner that we welcome on a daily basis.  Why is she being discriminated against because she has celebrity status?  So, she can afford a personal trainer.  If I had the means, I would have one too.  Some people here can afford expensive bikes, some do their tris on hand me down mountain bikes.  You know what, it doesn't matter.  We're triathletes.  I hope she does well and sticks with it.  Either way, good for her for trying.

i wouldnt call it hatred towards her, its just interesting when celebrities decide to take up triathlon for whatever reason...all of us here on BT have our reasons as to why we've taken up the sport, whether it be fund raising, health benefits or a need for the competitive juices to flow again....we dont expect any publicity for what we do, we just do it because we enjoy it...when a celebrity takes up the sport, the media has a field day with it, saying how inspiring they are, blah blah and how difficult a triathlon must be...i think maybe we as triathletes secretly wish people would realilze just how difficult this sport is, and how hard you have to work at it to succeed, and then they might give us the "props" that we deserve....i know that when i talk to my friends, they think oh since you havent raced the ironman distance yet, you race the easy races, which as we all know is a common b*llsh$t misconception...i guess the bottom line of what i was getting at is that we as normal triathletes put in all the hard work year after year and the celebrities get the "props" for trying such a hard sport and being so inspiring....oh well, i got my workout in today without a personal coach, and just ate dinner without my personal chef

The only way your friends and others are ever going to appreciate the work you do and give you the props you want is for the media to pick it up.  Now since triathlons do not have the appeal of baseball, football, or even golf, swimming and gymnastics, the only way for the media to pick it up (for now) is celebrity endorsement.

And this was not J Lo seeking publicity this was SELF magazine wanting to do this - they put her on the cover, they want people to buy it and they want the fundraising to be successful.

I have talked about doing triathlons on the news and radio (and might be when I go out to Chicago for accenture) but no one knows nor cares who the heck I am  - I am just some doc. So maybe one person will decide to pick it up listening to me.  Just think of how many men and women seeing J Lo might decide to try it?  Or maybe some other woman who is 6,9 or 12 months postpartum decides to do ANY exercise!

I think she is being a great role model.

You want more recognition, but you don't want the media to make a big deal out of it.  It's not going to happen.  The media picking it up and talking about it will do just that.

As for her personal coach and chef, who wouldn't want it?  If you have the money, you'd do it to.  I know I would.  But her coach isn't going to do the race for her.  She still has to go out and do the training and do the race.

i personally am not looking for any recognition, i know why i do this sport, and thats good enough for me....i was responding to the previous posts that had a negative tone towards what JLo is doing....i think its funny when celebrities get recognized for attempting such a difficult sport, when we have been training our backsides off for years....nothing is ever going to change the medias portrayal of celebrities, we have no control over that...its just amusing that they get all this attention for a sport they most likely wont continue once they realize the dedication and hard work thats necessary to compete regularly

and yes artemis, i sure would take a personal coach and chef if i had the disposable income she does....that last quote of mine came off a little snotty, but wasnt meant to be
