Went on a longer run on Sat. and noticed last night that my right big toe nail looked bruised underneath.  It's a little tender today too.  My shoes are on the new side, but I have been out in them before Sat. several times for more than an hour and over 6 miles without an issue.

I don't think I'm going to loose the nail this time (hopefully), but I want to know if there is any preventative measures for my next long run.  Trim the toenail, make sure my foot isn't slipping around in the shoe, etc.  Any other thoughts on saving the nail this time and prevention of future problems?

I don't really know how to same a nail, but good luck.

If it were throbbing in pain, I'd say drill a small hole in it, but if it's not bad just try to figure out why it got hurt in the first place.

Trim the nail, make sure it's not catching on socks, and make sure your shoes are the right size.  I've found the last two summers that I need a full size larger than my normal with long (> 6 mile) runs because my feet swell so much.

Usually when I think I'm going to lose the nail, I don't do anything.  Keeping it on as long as possible makes healing shorter in the long run than trimming it down or anything.  It seems to protect the new nail.

I've never had much luck saving a nail once it's bruised. Preventative measures are trimming the nails and getting shoes a half size larger.

I've got to agree with the above poster...in that, I too have never had much luck saving a nail once it's gotten to the point of being bruised underneath. I recently bruised the nail on my 2nd toe. For weeks it was purple but I thought it didn't look "too bad" and that I wasn't going to lose it...so I just let it be. A few more weeks went by, the purple color started to diminish and I thought to myself - "Yes! It's not going to fall off!" Wrong! The new toenail had already started growing underneath the old one...I didn't even realize it, until I touched it and noticed it was literally hanging on by a thread. I eventually just trimmed the old nail down short enough...and once the new nail fully grew in, what was left of the old nail just fell off. I don't think there really is much you can do to save it. If it hurts and is tender, perhaps one of those foam toe sleeves (for bunions) might help protect it somewhat.

Here is how to save them: Remove them all. You don't need those pesky things anyway

Note: Please don't take this as medical advice

OK, now for my real answer:

Nope, have never been successful at saving them once they turn black. Trimming it will certainly help once it starts to get loose though

Same thing here, I have one toe on each foot that is black/purple. They don't hurt at all, i just keep em trimmed. I'm sure they'll eventually fall off when the new ones grow underneath, but I'll let that happen on it's own. Is it weird that mine have been black for almost 2 months now?

I've bruised and lost a few toenails as well. I've found that sizing up my shoes, keeping my nails super short and tying my shoes a bit tighter using those extra holes that are at the top (there is this cross-tie you can do) keeps my feet from shifting around.

If it is lifted and hanging on, keep it as dry as possible because lifted toenails are more likely to get infections or fungus (yeah, really gross, but everything relating to runners' feet is).

I have had the extreme misfortunate of having dropped a lot of heavy stuff on my toes and I have had MANY nail bruises... For now, I say leave it alone and let nature take it's course.

But, if the bruise underneath starts to get really bad and hurts like hell, there is one thing I have done on a few occasions that helps a lot. I AM NOT A DOCTOR!!! I want to warn you that this will hurt a lot when you do it, but in the long run it will feel a lot better and save the nail.

1- take a sewing needle and rinse it in alcohol
2- heat the needle's point over an open flame until it gets red hot
3- put the tip of the needle against your nail (you may want to bit on a towel)

why it works: The needle will actually melt a small hole through your nail and it will relieve all of the pressure built up underneath. Stuff may squirt out (gross, I know) so don't do it on the couch or on nice carpeting.

Mine usually happen after half-marathon races outside.  I don't run on a treadmill too much.  Maybe that's another reason not to.

I never run on the treadmill. I lost my big toenails after the Chicago Marathon last year. It was so hot that my feet were soaked the entire race so I think they slid forward more than usual. I lost a little toenail just a month or so ago and it was from moderate distances. I didn't know it was bruised or damaged until it fell off. Needless to say, I can't go to the pedicure lady anymore without horrifying her!

I've damaged one of my big toe nails so much from skiing and cycling that my podiatrist has threatened me if I come back to him with ingrowns again he's just taking my whole nail.  Currently it's a bit purplish so I keep it painted and just try to keep it trimmed/filed down.  Doc says that most women just paint the skin where the nail would've been but I'd rather not go there.
