How many ironman seasons does it usually take someone to qualify for the Kona ironman?

ie. how long does it take to build up the endurance to be fast enough to qualify?

Thanks.

depends on the person (both genetics and desire to accomplish that); some will do it on their 1st try, some will never be able to do it no matter how many years they train...

Well--like the Cook Strait swim, the bigger part here may be logistics ...

You could train for many years, and as you go on, and if you age up a LOT (like, into the late 60s) your chances get better 'cause you have a huge sw/bk/run base and experience.

But then there is a HUGE game of where you try to qualify at, how many slots, who else shows up, etc.

Hey, it's a lot easier when you can have a dog towing you!

When I was 22 it took me 2 years to qualify.

I've been trying to get back there for the last 24 years.

That is another issue. Get above 25 and qualifying times plummet until...oh, 50.

If you are Chrissie Wellington you decide 5 weeks before an ironman to do it, win it.. and then win kona 6 weeks later. Everyone is different

Kona schmona...I'm more excited about IM Cozumel (I like the fishies there).    I'm planning on 5.5 years, starting this year, of training to get there; of course by then IM Cozumel may no longer exist.

Offthegrid - 2008-08-27 8:50 AM I plan to qualify when I am 70.

Exactly!  My plan is to keep racing until I'm so old that I'm  the only one left in my AG.  That's the only way I'll qualify.
