Subject: PS 3 Question
So I finally broke down and bought a PS3. While discussing it with the sales guy I specifically asked whether it would play PS2 games. He stated that the 40GB wouldn't but the 80GB would (mind you this was a selling point for my wife, so I wouldn't have to buy older games I like again). Got home, hooked it up, checked out the new games I bought, then put in a PS2 game, no dice!! It says the software doesn't support PS2 games. Can I download the software once I get the wireless aspect working or did I get bum information?

Also, how do I get my memory cards from my PS2 loaded onto my PS3?

Bummer dude. Seems like you got semi-bum information. There ARE certain 80 GB versions that are backwards compatible, but the newer versions out there aren't. Looks like you got one that isn't. The only one I know of that's out there these days that is BC is the one in the Metal Gear Solid Bundle.

As for software to allow for playing PS2 games, I haven't heard anything as of late for addressing the issue. AFAIK, there won't be any.

Not sure about the memory cards, haven't had much time to play my ps3 lately.

You got screwed by Sony constantly changing their system specs. There are two types of backwards compatibility with the PS3, hardware and software. The original 60GB model of the PS3 has the best PS2 compatibility because it has actual PS2 hardware inside it. There are newer versions of the PS3 that got rid of this and replaced it with software based emulation. The most recent models have gotten rid of even that. There is no way to add in the PS2 compatibility. Your best bet is to look for an older model if you want to use it for PS2 games.

Hardware compatibility: Means you can put the disk in the tray

Software compatibility: Means it will actually play the game.

That's rough man! Sorry to hear that. Especially since the PS3 is the most expensive one out there, it should work.

I don't think there's a way to get your PS2 memory cards onto the PS3.  If there is, I haven't figured it out since getting a PS3.

As far as backwards compatibility, the guy was just wrong.  The new ones aren't backwards compatible at all and I don't think you can do anything to make them that way.  We bought a used 60 GB model so that we could have that.

Playstation 3 memory card adapter, 15 bucks at amazon.  You can probably get it cheaper on eBay since most people only need it once.

Wow, didn't know they'd changed them that much.  I bought my 80gb about a year ago and it plays PS2 games just fine.  Sorry to hear that yours doesn't.
