Anyone familar with what happened to me in St. Petersburg the day before St. Anthony's last year knows how I feel about those who ride without helmets.  I think it takes a significant bike wreck to make folks a true believer ... provided that they survive.

Since the children lack the perspective necessary to make the decision to wear a helmet, I believe that the parents ought to be held responsible.  The thought of a child riding without a helmet, I believe, borders on child neglect.

Btw, first Ron starts posting again then Madden is back ... what is next, Lance Armstrong racing again?

This quote stuck out at me:

"King-Bolger said it wasn't easy getting her two boys to wear helmets. "I was the helmet witch. When my kids were younger and riding bikes and skateboarding downtown, I felt strongly that they wore helmets. This is a small village and I had my spies out there, asking other parents if they had seen my boys without helmets."

Umm...aren't you the Parent?!  Felt strongly they they wore helmets.  How about you wear them or you walk?

I wear helmets doing everything.  After knocking myself out once on a skateboard and twice on a snowboard, I became a firm advocate.

I especially get burnt up when I see XC MTBers not wearing helmets.  I've cracked three in the woods and don't know if I would be walking and functioning properly without them.

There are these 2 kids in my hood that ride all the time without helmets. And they are not on the sidewalk but ride all over the road (our hood has no sidewalks). They are 3 and 7. I am constantly yelling at them to wear helmets. They sometimes tag along when my kids ride to school or I take the kids out on their bikes while I run (my kids--5 and 7-- are not allowed to ride their bikes unsupervised). The neighbor kids are not allowed to come with me unless they have on helmets. Their mother knows this so will enforce the helmet rule only when they ride with me. Solo, she doens't seem to care. It is just a matter of time until these kids get hit.

On the flip side I rode out today forgeting my helmet. I made it a mile when I realized my mistake. And yes, I went back to get it. But once I realized it was gone I was so nervous I was going to wreck. As if just wearing the helmet alone prevents that.

It's GA law that kids under 16 have to wear a helmet on a bike. Not to many people are aware of that though.

I see where you're going and I agree.  I was just commenting on the whole parent not being in control thing.  :P

Whenever I see a rider without a helmet, I'm the crazy lady who yells, "Put on your skid lid!".  My mom sells orthopedic equipment like spine halos.  She tells me stories about kids under 10 being hit by cars or falling who end up being paralized for life.  What a waste!  What stupidity!

For some reason it makes me laugh that you used the word hood... twice!  Maybe those little kids are more preoccupied with being mowed down by a drive by than wearing there helmets? Smile

Having just bounced my head off of the pavement in a low speed (my error) spin-out, I'm a firm believer in the helmet.  I would probably not have been seriously injured if my actual head had hit the road, but it was nice for to not have such a bad headache.

My kids will be wearing their helmets, dorky or not.

You did replace that helmet right?  Seriously once it hits the pavement, get a new one.

Not yet, but working on it.  I'd thought that I might not need to get a new one, but it's all cracked inside.  We have a spare that I'm wearing until I get the new one.

Yea - it doesn't even need to be cracked to need to be replaced.  Once your helmet has an impact, it's integrity is questionable at best.  The problem is the next time you need the helmet it might not do it's job.  Helmets are the one thing I never have a problem dropping money on.
