Subject: Elite/world-class "Clydesdale" triathletes?

Hey gang...

Fairly new to the world of tri's, and fairly ignorant of the history of the sport at the elite/world-class level.  I'm 6-3, 206#.  It's a bit frustrating to realize that I have something of an inherent physical disadvantage in endurance sports over some of the smaller/scrawnier guys - but like most guys my size I do take some comfort from the existence of a "Clydesdale" division in most of the smaller events.

Just wondering, are there any notable exceptions to this "rule" - i.e. can anyone think of any examples of elite/world-class male triathletes at or over 200#?

Chris

I'm in the same boat 6-3, 210.  I find that I can compete as Clydesdale but for some reason I always do age group.

His was the name I was trying to remember.  However, I thought he was heavier.  Dang, my 6'7" 225# looks worse and worse all the time.

I'm curious how he would do if he had to s/b/r with a 45# plate on his back (I know it's not the same)....

Probably not quite in the "Elite" category but a friend of mine went from 260 lbs to running a 3:09 Marathon. "Marathon and Beyond" is currently in the process of doing a story about him so if your interested keep an eye out for it. The title of the story is going to be:

"260 to 3:09 - My long, strange and highly unlikely journey from Montana to Boston"

An interesting tidbit is that the title is a play on the screen name of another friend of mine, "261 to 26.2". He started out at 261 LBS and his best marathon time is just a hair over 3 Hours. (he was shooting for Sub-3 at Tucson last year and missed it by 4 seconds)

Just curious, why didn't he take some creative liberties and go with 262 to 26.2?  My weight fluctuates 5 lbs a day, so it wouldn't be a lie.

Regardless, those are inspirational stories I like to hear...

Heh, I do, every day!  I would be SOOOO fast  (as long as I didn't lose strength).  If I could get to 205, I could be a force, since I'm just short of the podium for my AG right naw as I am, at some races...

For example, I used to be 235 when playing beach volleyball, but then dropped about 20 pounds.  I could get to SO many more balls and make so many more plays because I didn't have to drag 20 extra pounds around.

yea Ahmed is a pretty cool guy also.. I think he is around 8-9 % bodyfat still smoking fast at 44 or 45.

I keep thinking if I could get to single digit body fat I'd be around 200lbs, but then the economy would stall if I'm not snacking on M&M's

with the 261 to 26.2 guy how much did he weigh at the end?

I done ultra marathons at 3:20+ and let me tell you I took over 1 hour after I went from 300 lbs to 265 for a 50k. when I crossed mile 21 at about 4 1/2 hours I was like omg I have 4 hours to do 10 miles to pr. That last ten still took me 3 hours though. .

I was wondering about matt reed since I am 6'6" and figure I will always be 225+. When I get to 225 I will decide if I can go lower. I know lower is better but being an A/G it does not always work so well.

He is still a bit over 200 lbs and races as a clyde if they happen to have the division available in the Marathons he runs.

He is super fast and according to Athlinks, is my prime competition. (we have run a lot of the same local races)

Here's a guy who carries an extra 140 pounds or so and is (as far as I'm concerned) as elite as they get... www.cjcphoto.com/can

There are quite a few large people who do tri's... ironman distance. I know a guy like you who competes as a clyde. He also can't lose much more weight as he  is a police officer and needs to be able to fight. He has a rather dangerous appearance...not too small... not too big... strong and quick.

 Ron

When being chased by a bear... You don't have to outrun the bear... You just have to outrun the other guy.
