Subject: Anyone else get that "Full" feeling during races?
In 2 of my HIM races i've got this feeling on the run.  I am so thirsty, but my stomach is full and i can't drink anything.  I feel fine on the bike, but when i get to the run i'm totally fun and can't drink or eat anything.  And i'm not taking in that many calories. 2 gels and hour along with a 1/2 bottle of accelerade on the bike.  I've used the same food/drink amounts in all of my HIM races, but 2 out of the 4 i had this problem.  Anyone else deal with this and have any advice?

Too much sugar in your stomach.  It is not getting processed out of there, and just starts to build up until more fluids are added to dilute it.  It certainly isn't helping that the fluid you're using ALSO has a lot of carbs from sugar in it .......

Either cut out the Accelerade and go to straight water, or lose one of the gels and mix water and the Accelerade throughout the ride.

Are you not taking in any water with the gels?  That's stated on every gel package that I've used to take with 6-8oz of water.

Read through some of this for nutrition information, page 44 might have some info regarding your situation.

I have had this problem with Accelarade.   It has whey protein in it which is a milk bi-product.   It also foams up in the bottle.  Just an overall  bad idea (doesn't work) for me.

Try some different products.  I like GU2O because it's all complex carbs (no sugar)

Also count your calories so you know how much your body can digest per hour wihout feeling sick.

also measure your sweat rate so you know how much to drink.  (just weigh yourself naked before and after your bike rides taking into account how much you drink during your ride)  this will tell you how much to drink per hour to replace lost fluids without drinking too much.

that's a lot to play with, but there are a lot of variables regarding nutrition that can be tweaked to fit each athlete.  Good hunting.

You have to keep drinking regularly throughout a race.  Your extremeties want the blood diverted from your internal organs so that they can use the blood.  If you do not keep your stomach/intestines in operation they get less blood flow and in many ways shut down.  Drink water to keep things flowing.

Also, as was stated before, the body will have a hard time absorbing all of the carbs when they exceed something like 5 ish % by weight.  This is why gatorade isn't 30,40 or 60% carbohydrates...the water is necessary, more concentrated carbs is not better.  When you exceed that 5ish% concentration your stomach will get upset and not beable to digest the carbs.  When you take in a gel, take some water also so that it gets diluted in the stomach.

That aside, by the time I am done with a marathon or HIM, the last thing I want to do is eat or drink something..I'm full!  A couple of years ago I watched the winners from both mens and women's races throw up as they tried to drink after they finished the Boston Marathon.  Stomach shutdown.

Thanks for all the suggestions.  Yes i do drink water with every GU.  I probably need to switch to a different drink besides Accelerade.  Also, i did put an extra scoop in my drink because i like a strong taste.  Maybe that played a part in my stomach not cooperating. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Is there such a thing as to much carb loading the few days before a race?  I had a footlong sub for luch and dinner the day before my race.

Carbo loading in general is a very misinterpreted thing ......

Unless you are properly tapering, have taxed your glycogen stores to the limit and "trained" your body to store more, then you cannot carbo load to begin with.

Rick is right ... that "full" feeling is often a sign of nutritional overload.

Try doing a workout of similar length and intensity with less calories and, as the others opined, with more just plain water.

When faced with a similar circumstance, I curtailed my caloric input by 25% (from 420 cal/hour to ~300 cal/hour) and was amazed by the uptake in speed and endurance.

Sometimes less is more.  This could be one of those instances.

I have read in the triathlete's training bible that if you make your drink to sweet, then it does not digest as quickly and can lead to bloating, cramping, etc...  I always tend to try and make mine on the light side now just b/c of that.

Keep in weather plays a big part in what you consume also - the sweat rate % is right on target, but you have to pay attention to the weather.  You'll have a different sweat rate in a cooler climate, than in a hot and humid climate.
