Extreme Veteran 391![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Olive Branch, MS | Subject: Bike during marathon training questionI need some suggestions on maintaining bike fitness during marathon training. I am training for a December marathon with hopes of a May 2009 HIM. I am finding it hard to fit rides in during this time, and I am scared I will lose what little bike fitness I have acheived so far this year. Any help getting me motivated to ride would be appreciated. |

Many (Higdon, P-D for sure) have days for rest and/or cross training. Use those for the bike. If that's not enough (and i'd shoot for a minimum of three per week) then add a bike on the day of the "easiest" run as well. |

Extreme Veteran 582![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Denver, CO | Subject: RE: Bike during marathon training questionI'm currently training for a 1/2 marathon (following the hal higdon plan), but I did a duathlon (run, bike, run) last weekend. I've been fitting my bike workouts into the days on my running plan that are "rest" or "strength/stretch" days. Or, sometimes if I have a short, easy run, I'll do a brick. I too don't want to lose my bike fitness, so I'm trying to keep it up as well as I can. Good luck! |

I've been swimming on my "off" days, trying to give the 'ol dogs a rest. Guess I just have to get off my a** and ride. I guess I was looking for another answer. Don't think I'll ever find one though. |

Longest ride was probably less than 30 miles during that period. Did one reverse-sprint tri three weeks before the marathon. Was fourth in AG in that sprint and took one hour off my marathon time, so I'm probably going to stick with that 4:3:1 mix again this winter. |

I know I ran 4 marathon+ distance races in 8 weeks with only running 5 miles at 1 time. I ran alot but not alot at one time and I had alot of cross training. One on my day off (Run 6 days a week) and one on my shorter run days. Nothing too taxing, but it least it keeps my general bike fitness. I'm slightly injured now so am not able to keep to this exact formula, but I did it for Boston as well and had a great start to my '08 bike season. |

However, I've been doing zero since Steelhead (8/2) while focusing on a 11/1 marathon. I guess, I'll just have to bear down on the trainer this winter to get my bike mojo back. |

I guess using the trainer for the threshold session would be ok? |

Master 1404![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Atlanta, Ga | Subject: RE: Bike during marathon training questionThis is along the lines of run less, run faster.. I don't subscribe to that theory at all, but I do follow the 'First' program loosely. Look at the sample training schedule in the PDF http://www.furman.edu/first/2006%20marathon%20training-first%20marathon.pdf I run 4 days per week, and x train others. 1 day off. Bike was always on Sunday. I am attempting to BQ at Chicago next week. I agree that 3 rides per week is overkill during a ramp up period for a marathon with no other biking goal than to not lose bike specific fitness. |

I am actually following the advanced version of this-loosely as well, as I have been running 4-5 days. I have just not made biking a high enough priority. I need to get this straightened out. I will start with I threshold trainer session and 1 easy/steady and see if I can handle more/less and go from there. The focus will be running hence that will be my priority but doing 1-2, 30-60 min threshold sessions x week should help me sustain cycling fitness and maybe even increse my power. amiine - 2008-10-03 8:26 AM you can do one steady ride as recovery from running and if your load/fitness allows it add one weekly threshold short set (20-30 min). that should allow you to maintain some of your cycling fitness Thanks Jorge for confirming this for me! 3 rides per week seemed like a little overkill when running 5X/week.
