Subject: Newbie bike fear a year later.

I wrote this in my blog, and figured I would share it as there have been a number of threads about riding near cars, clipless pedals, riding aero.....

Whilst riding I was thinking of how much I have learned this year, how much I have changed....
A year ago I was doing spinning class as the beginning of my training for the biking portion of triathlon.  I did not even own a bike.  I used clipless pedals for the first time - starting with that class.  It was October when I bought my P3C - though I did not ride it outside - I rode it in a class at Landry's on a trainer - where I got used to the Look pedals.  By mid November I bought  road bike - and did my first outdoor rides with clipless pedals - and of course my first falls....I was terrified to ride on the roads with cars and tried to stick just to paths (that partly goes back to an accident 3 years ago but I digress).  I had horrid bike handling skills.  My friends would see the bruises on my legs and ask what had happened and I would nonchalantly answer oh just a clip fall - they were a regular occurence.

The winter riding indoors made me strong, but on a trainer.  I learned how to take my bike apart to pack it for travel - and put it together again.  The first time I did this was about one month before my first triathlon - I took the bike with me to florida and did my first rides.  Aero was HARD - I did not change gears, I did not MOVE once I was aero  There was no drinking water....I was petrified and as a results I ended up doing that whole first race on the horns.

Now I have no issues riding aero, I tend not to have clip falls (but not never....) my bike handling skills have gotten pretty good (thank you to NEBC's introduction to bike racing and Wells' avenue crits for that). In general I am comfortable on my bike, no problems riding around cars, and getting bolder about that little space between the cars and sidewalk....some things will always be difficult...I can put my bike together after travel in about 10 minutes and break it down similarly.

I have a long way to go but it is fun to take a minute and think back....

so for all of you struggling right now, I am proof that it gets easier!

NEBC race clinic was great!

Bike gladiator..if it became an official sport I'm in for it

Part of the fun in this tri life is looking back from where we came and see how what we do now would blow our old selves minds.

That's great to hear! I just got clipless pedals this weekend and had my first ride on them. Came close to a fall once but fortunately managed to finish without any road rash or those nifty bruises.

You'll be tearing it up in races in 2009, no doubt!

Thanks for posting.

I am glad I'm not the only one that feels like a super chicken on a bike when they get on it the first time.  Everytime I ride, I get better but I know its going to be a bit of work to get me good and comfortable.

It's great to hear that the fear is overcomeable. I felt nervous riding all through the spring and then crashed during my first tri of the season in June. I haven't been able to ride the bike on the road since then. I attempted my second tri in July and had an anxiety attack upon exiting the water to transition to the bike. I cancelled my third tri in August.

Cat, do you remember one of your first rides down memorial drive in clips?  I remember you having to stop at a million lights and cars "buzzing the tower" the whole ride.  You were a wreck during and really pissed off after.  Now, I picture you calmly unclipping while a car buzzes you and kicking its rear quarter panel.

x2. I am still not very confident on my bike. I have had it since May. Due to my hectic schedule I am on the trainer alot. My outdoor rides are on a bike trail. I just seem to struggle on the bike more than I think I should. It is very frustrating.

OMG yes!!! and I ripped my brand new cycling tights on a clip fall 2 blocks from my house!!!! I was so sure I was going to make it - my knee swelled all up....

now I just block obnoxious south shore drivers who honk at me and take up the whole lane - because I can!  and yeah kick 'em if they get too close

I PROMISE it gets easier.  The last time I rode outside before last year, was May 2006.  I was on an old mountain bike, and my wheel got caught in the train tracks and I went flying over the handlebars landing on my chin and hands.  I had central spinal cord changes (could not move my arms immediately following) that have left me with neck pain that eminates from the spinal cord.  I needed shoulder surgery and three thumb surgeries.  I finally completed all that medical care last october, when I decided triathlons would be a good idea!

So YES I relate to the anxiety and fear all of you starting this are going through.  It DOES get better, it DOES get easier, you DO get better and better....

I NEVER thought I would like road cycling!  Now I want to race it (and do).  I never thought I would get the hang of riding aero - I thought I lacked that  gene....but here I am.

and only one year later!

Thanks so much for posting this! I have been struggling so much with the handling of my road bike. I was so comfortable on my mountain bike but the road bike is so much more responsive. I'm glad I'm not the only one who has struggled and I'm glad to know that I can over come this. thanks!
