Subject: Pushups - WTF?
I just did incline pushups for the first time ever. I've been doing "alternative" pushups (chick-style, on my knees) for quite awhile, and wanted to bump it up a notch. Well, I bumped it alright - that HURT! I'm trying to figure out if I'm doing something wrong. What hurts is the middle right rib on my back. It feels like one actual rib hurts, very localized, right on top of the bone, and just on that side. I know it is obviously the muscle, not the bone, but I'm wondering what I'm doing to make whatever that attachment point or muscle head or whatever tell me what's up. Any thoughts? I would guess I'm around a 25-30 degree angle, haven't measured yet.

I have no idea how you would hurt a rib.  I do a few hundred pushups at various angles and arm widths.  Hurt lower back or shoulders I can see,  but not ribcage.  Sorry no help here.

Maybe if you do them at the gym next time ask someone to look at your technique.

One thing I notice is that when people start doing the "regular" kind of pushup, their waist/torso tend to sag/drop.  That creates an "arch" on your back.  Try to keep a straight spine.  Tuck in your tummy helps.

If you're doing your pushups with your elbows close in to your ribs (which is actually proper), then you'll activate the lats as well. You may have some localized soreness from the lower lat attachment.

Just a wild guess.

Easy - you pulled a lat.  No big deal.  A little ice, a little rest and it'll be fine.  What happened is you tried something new.  Mix it up, even in a small way and you discover new types of pain.  When's the last time anyone did a Stairmaster?  Or played squash/raquetball?  Climbed a rock wall?  When all you typically do is swim, bike and run, you throw in a new kind of exercise and suddenly use a long-forgotten muscle or use one in a different way.

Standard ouchie.

Time to switch to push ups on your toes all the time!  You won't be able to crank out nearly as many, so just switch to holding the pushup position, but still on your toes.  I go to this women's boot camp, and on day 1 we got a lesson that it's a better overall workout to just do a pushup hold but be on your toes than do girl pushups on your knees.  I have not done any research to back this up, but i bet you'll get better at them on your toes quicker than you think!  Involves a good bit more core, which is always a good thing.

This doesn't answer your question, but rather is some chick to chick pushup encouragment!

I sometimes get a similair pain in my back.  I figured it was just some type of muscle spasm.   Comes and goes for me.  Kind of similair to a muscle cramp, almost as if the muscle is not getting enough oxygen.

 That is my story.

I like to vary my pushup routine. I do them everyday, but do a different style of them each day...mix it up a little, so I don't get bored. One day I'll do regular full military style (on toes), the next I'll do them using a BOSU trainer (makes you more wobbly, so you use your core more), the next day I'll put my feet up on a raised platform (stepboard or something), the next day I'll do them with my feet propped up on a stability ball, then sometimes I do them with one leg raised about a foot off the ground, then switch legs. I'm to the point where I can do 3-4 sets of 15 without any problems...but when I started I couldn't even do 1. It just takes time and persistence. Keep at it!

Sounds like an injury that was on the edge of happening. Maybe the strain from your pushups sent it over the limit.

I'm pretty sure that's what happened (thanks to Bigfuzzydog, too). I got out an ancient anatomy book and prodded around until I figured out what went where, and guessed the lower lats. I didn't realize they came so low, which is why that didn't occur to me.

Thanks for all the suggestions, though! Took the weekend off, and now hopefully I'm good to go for tomorrow!

Little bit of a hijack here, but I have always wondered, when doing a push-up (not on your knees), what percentage of your body weight are you actualy pushing?  Anybody know?

I love me some pushups! I utilize the Perfect Pushup system with  incline and regular pushups to do about 200 a session! Sometimes I feel it in my shoulders and back but not ribs. I have photos in my album from when I started back in Feb 08 through October, it helps keep me motivated to see any gains.

x2 on perfect pushup.... IT is the first and only "infomercial" exercise product I have ever purchased and it does mix things up. I feel I get to use better form and well as easier on wrists etc. They also have good workout chart included that helps you progress over time. Since gettign into Tri's last year or so, this replaced most of my strength training along with CORE workout.
