Subject: Ironman Louisville
I'm planning to do my first IM in 2009 and I saw where IM Louisville is still accepting applications, while most other US IM are already full. Just wondering, but is there something negative about IM Louisville that I'm not aware of? Is there a reason why people don't sign up for this race like the other US races? Just thought I'd check before possibly committing to the race. Thanks for any help.

There are a few other discussions about this so you might want to use the search feature. That being said, I think the general consensus is that it is just a new race and there are other bigger, higher profile races to choose. Between it's newness, the possibility of heat (it is in late August) and it's location (no offense, but I've been to Louisville and wasn't THAT impressed) people are just choosing other races. Based on race reports and reviewing other threads I've heard a ton of great things about this race and didn't have any hesitation when signing up.

Hope that helps.

The TT start, low # of slots and close proximity to Kona makes it less attractive for those who want to qualify for the World Championship.
The water is too warm for wetsuits so weak swimmers might be discouraged.
Bike course has rolling hills so weak cyclists might be discouraged.
Run course is hot without much shade so weak runners might be discouraged.

Personally, I think all of those reasons (except the Kona one) are ridiculous and no reason not to sign-up.  Of the 4 IM courses I've raced, Louisville is by far my favorite.

X2 I will see you there!

Plus that warm water is in a RIVER. That is my only compliant (well I think the TT start is bogus too). I like what IMOO has to offer....

I did it last year as my first Ironman.  I had a great time and if I wasn't doing Coeur D'Alene next year I would consider Louisville again.  I think it's been covered in this thread and others as to pro's and con's of the race.

One thing to note is they don't allow on-site sign up for that years athletes and volunteers.  It is all over the web and you have to pay immediately.  That means you don't have athletes and volunteers grabbing the vouchers and limiting the amount of on-line slots.  Depending on ones point of view that may or may not be a good thing and I know that NAS has changed their policy around this going forward.  However, I do think it is one of the reasons there are still slots available on-line.

If you have questions about the race, venue, etc... feel free to shoot me a PM and I'll try and answer them.

Matt

Louisville is my favorite IM race!!  (oh, wait... it's my only IM race so far.)

I'm with Aaron.  I liked the challenge of the course.  I feel more accomplished having done the swim without the crutch of a wetsuit.  The challenge of the bike course is the "rolling hills", especially if you're from part of the country that doesn't have rolling hills within 100 miles to practice on.

It's a well run event.  It's also fairly spectator-friendly.  But don't back down from the challenge.  If it were easy, it wouldn't be Ironman.

Tempe AZ is not exactly a tourist Mecca either.  :-)

I think it is the best-kept M-dot IM venue secret.
