Subject: Running tights for running AND cycling?
I'm too cheap to buy some long cycling tights and running tights so I was wondering if there is any reason to not just buy some running tights and wear them over/under my cycling shorts if I cycle in the cold? I wouldn't do any really long rides in the cold (would rather just run if it is THAT cold) but was wondering if that arrangement would work for rides of, say, up to an hour. Obviously I would also run in them when necessary. Oh, and any suggestions on what tights to get? I'm a guy, about 6ft2, if that makes a difference. Talking of tights, I took the kids to see Tinkerbell (Disney) on Ice this weekend but that is another thread altogether (grin). Thanks for your thoughts.

I just bought Under Armour cold gear tights for $49 at Academy.  I am doing exactly what you're saying.  I rode this weekend with them under my cycling shorts.  I am too poor to buy cycling tights and a different pair for running.  So I did this!  And so far so good.  FWIW, I'm a hair over 6' and they fit just fine.

36F when I walked out of the house.  Felt just fine really.

Works for me.  I have the leg covers also, but sometimes they will pull out from under my cycling shorts.  If I know it will be cold and I will not want to take em off, I go with the full running tights over the bike shorts.  Whatever makes you feel comfortable.

I do just that.  I've got a pair of $26 leggings from Champion (from Target).  I've worn them biking underneath my cycling shorts in 20-25 degree weather, with about an hour or so long ride.  Works well for me.  Good luck.

Legs are not really the issue when it comes to cold, it is the extremeties.  In the rare instances where I do ride in the cold I also use UA cold gear over my usual cycling shorts (for the padding).  Same with the UA cold gear top.

I'll run in those as well all the way down to 20 degrees or so (with a jacket of course).

I have a pair of Road Runner running tights I wear over my cycling shorts (OVER, not under, ouch).  But I am in so cal so hi 40s is wicked cold.

I've noticed that some people posted that they wear their long tights UNDER their cycling shorts. Would it not be better to wear the tights OVER the shorts? My thinking is that...you'd benefit from the chamois pad in the cycling shorts more, if there wasn't another layer underneath them, right? Plus, it just seems like it would be uncomfortable (to me), to wear something underneath a padded cycling short. Any opinions on this?

I've got a pair of Cannondale tights that I got from Nashbar.com that I use for both cycling and running.  Fortunately, living in Florida, I don't need them that often.

I wear them over my cycling shorts to take full advantage of the padding in the shorts.

Yep. I wear running tights over my cycling shorts. I just have one pair of heavier cycling tights that I wear when it's 40ish degrees and below. I don't need anything that thick for running until it gets down into the 20s or teens.

Same, I already said I wear them "over" ...... doesn't make sense to wear them under.

Long underwear (the capiline kind) also works over the cycling/tri shorts.

I got a pair of Nashbar Mansfield thermal unpadded tights that work great for both running and cycling for $24.99!

I was about to mention that.  Wearing tights under your cycling shorts (assuming you have real cycling shorts with a chamois and all) completely defeats the purpose of cycling shorts and is about a Fred thing as wearing your helmet backwards.

For the uninitiated, the primary purpose of the chamois in your cycling shorts is the smooth surface and lack of seams, which prevents chafing.  The secondary purpose is padding.  This is why tri-shorts have a thin chamois.  You can deal without the padding for one ride, but you can't deal without the lack of seams and smooth surface, or else you will end up quite well chafed.

For those who doubt, wear a regular pair of underwear underneath your riding shorts, and then go on a nice long ride.  let me know if you can even walk the next day, without screaming in pain from your raw red, chafed crotch.  OUCH!

Well, I thought this is funny.  Chris Yenke, our coach for my Junior Cycling team(he was a pro in Europe for a coupla years), saw some of my friends wearing the tights underneath, and basically the answer is that it looks cooler.  He had plain blacks tights on and aqua colored neckwarmer.  I stay nice and comfy.  And usually the difference between running and biking tights are that the biking ones block the wind a lot better.

That's what I wear (over bibs) on rides down to mid 30s. Less than 30F and I'm on the trainer.
Cycling specific tights have a wind barrier in the front and can be expensive. I find hands, feet and face to be my biggest concerns.

Ron Hill tracksters do everything you could ask for. I don't know a US supplier though so you may have to get them shipped from the UK

I find running tights slippery on my saddle. Get cycling tights without the chamois and they work for both. For a year or two I wore my Pearl Izumi winter tights to run and to bike in all winter long...took them off and washed right away.

I wouldn't wear them under my bike shorts but over..I like my chamois next to my bum not some running tights.

OK.  I wear mine under because my cycling shorts are very, very bulky and have a very thick chamois, too.  I can't pull my tights over them!  Laughing  I'm just grateful to have a pair, and when I get a more traditional pair, I'll wear them over.
