Subject: Beach 2 Battleship : Official Thread

Well I figured I'd start an "official" thread for this race...since right now we only have the registration begins thread which is now just over in the discussion part......

This will be my first full IM and I've gotta say that at THIS point I'm exicted about it.  I was very confident in signing up right when registration opened up but have had some of those what I'm doing??? thoughts as registration has gone slowly.....

Edit:  OK I thought I did this the right way from my race log to get it to the "other" iron distance section buttttttttt........................

Oh my gosh, I feel the exact same way. Kind of like buyer's remorse - what the hell was I thinking!? My first iron as well.

I've read your blog and you seem like you've had many of the same thoughts/concerns that I've had!!!  Of course you seem to be getting in much better training than I have recently...

The weather/temp thing is a crap shoot for B2B---I like your thinking of tracking what you wear for what temp as November can be a big swing like it was for this years race----real cold morning and then warming......need to get some neo booties!!!Surprised

Hey thanks, I feel honored you read my blog. Training doesn't really begin till beginning of May. I've just been maintaining/burning calories.

Thanks for reminding me, I need to track what I wore on today's ride! Happy New year!

PS: Is NoVa Northern Virginia?

Yup good ol Northern VA aka the ever expanding DC suburb......

I hear you on the training not "really" starting yet---I'm trying to get a rock solid base through the whole winter so that come May (after Kinetic HIM) I can start "really" training for B2B!!!

PS---and my vote was for both the dough and cookies!!!  I can't ever get all the cookies baked without eating some of the dough.........

This will be my first as well.  I look forward to seeing everyone's progress over the next year.  San Diego RNR Marathon will be my first "A" race then I will start the training for B2B.  Wow, this year is going to be fun!  Chet

You are coming a long way to do this race. What attracted you to it? I'm doing it because it's close to home!

I'm going to follow the 24 week Level 1, 2 or 3 plan (not sure which yet) from Matt Fitzgerald's book "Triathlete Magazine's Essential Week by Week training guide". I followed the Level 7 plan for Pinehurst OLY and it was a superb plan. All of the Level 1-3 IM plans have 3x workouts per week and are designed to get you across the finish feeling strong with minimal training. Level 4-7 are for performance, and 8-10 are for 'pros'. The plan calls for an oympic 'tune-up' race in week 12 and a HIM in week 20. Ooo, that sounds perfect for the Duke 1/2 monster!

Good luck to all!

Wow Chet that is a distance to travel!!  Although it does look like from the registration list that there will be some folks traveling to get to the race.

I'm still not sure on which plan I want to follow---I figure I have sometime to figure it out and will probably make the decision after the Kinetic HIM in May---that will still give me about 25 weeks to B2B so I figure I can see what went well with the HIM (based on my training between now and then...) and what needs to be worked on and pick a 20 week plan from there........

I gave my wife the choice since she has to put up with me over the next year.  She picked B2B because her brother lives in Charlotte and it gives us a reason to stay with them for a while.  I also like the idea because I have spent so little time on the East Coast.  The other challenges (shipping a bike, traveling, weather etc) will just add to the experienceLaughing

I am going with the Intermediate Ironman program here on BT.  I like the alternating weeks and how it lines up with my schedule.

This will be my first iron as well. Haven't really had any of the "buyers remorse" you guys speak of. Just a real good picture of the amount of training necessary. I'm more excited than anything. Oh well, here we go.....

This will also be my first full distance IM race. After the reviews of this race came out, even for its first year, it sounds like we are in for a great one!

Falls Runner,

What did you wear on the bike this year?  I am experimenting now as I tend to tighten up a lot when I am cold.  I saw that it started out cold (I live in Vegas where 40 is COLD) but warmed up a bunch this year on the bike.  I was wondering how you delt with it.  Chet

Thats what I am thinking. Everyone that I've spoken to spoke very highly of the race and most where signed up for '09 already. The only negative thing I heard was that it got really hot on the run, but it was a guy that just ran the run on a relay team, he seemed to have a pretty bad attitude overall so I didn't even pay attention to him. But hey, if it was easy everyone would do an Ironman.

If you're a marathoner, then yes, it was really hot on the run since most of them would like too have a run in low 40s to low 50s.  You let me know if you find anyone who wants to do an iron distance race where it warms up into the 50s by T2.....

I think one would be hard pressed to find more ideal conditions that day (though most everyone would have appreciated a warmer start, or at least a warmer sidewalk to T1, I think).  Sunny, no wind, highs maybe in the mid 60s.

Last year's race was an unseasonably cold day. Here are the averages for Nov 7th in Wilmington, NC.

Temperature: Actual Average Record
Mean Temperature 64 °F 59 °F
Max Temperature 78 °F 71 °F 80 °F (2005)
Min Temperature 50 °F 48 °F 31 °F (1982)

I for one am hoping for a more typical day for us! Still, I am tracking what I wear now in the winter and what the temperature was that day, and how I felt on my ride. That way I will know what to wear on race day.

I froze on the first 30 miles of the ride last year, but after that it was perfect weather. If the temps are similar this year I will take the time to dry my arms in T1 and put on arm warmers and maybe wear socks. I was so cold in the early miles of the bike last year that thoughts of dropping out crossed my mind. At the first aid station my hands were so frozen that I couldn't grasp the water bottle from the volunteer.

Last year my race was going perfectly coming into T2 (9th place OA) and I just needed a steady 3:40 marathon to break 10 hours. Unfortunately I came into the race with IT band issues and it flared up at mile 10 of the run. From there it was 16 miles of pain, suffering and hobbling to a 10:49 finish. This year I want to redeem myself!!!!

I wore a sleeveless tri top, cycling shorts shorts, knee and arm warmers, full finger gloves, and smartwool type socks.  T1 was slow but it worked perfectly....never was "really cold".....

Silverman this year started out cold, got nice and then got cold and windy.  I could have played guitar on my IT bands.  I couldn't open my stride on the run and had a very slow run.  I think arm warmers, leg warmers and gloves are the ticket (thanks Falls).  I can then peel and put them back on if needed.  Time in T1 is of little concern as I am a slow and steady kind of guy.  We are having similar weather here in Vegas right now so I am getting it figured out before it gets to be 120 degrees out.  After the summer, the cold always sounds good but poses a problem when most of my training will be at or above 100 degrees.  Hope you all had a great New Year's Eve!

Swimshady---that's still a great race!!!  I'm sure you will redeem yourself this year and go sub-10.  Your hands being frozen at the first aid station is something that can easily be overlooked if you don't ride in the "cold"....I took my bike out for a spin the other day and was so very happy that I just happened to grab some thin gloves---I never would have made it more then a few minutes without them!!!  I'm glad you mentioned it here because it's not something I would've necessarily thought of for the race but even a cheap (disposable) pair of thin gloves for the bike start might be a good idea...

Being a northerner may be a benefit but I did think about the cooler temps and have picked up leg warmers, and will add arm warmers and a cheap pair of cloth gloves just in case it's cool again.

With my luck and history we will have some good thunderstorms and wind, so you all may want to prepare for that.

I noticed only 3 folks have signed up today for the full (Jan 2) and figured it would start filling up soon since this race opened last Jan 2.  I wonder if the increased race fee is keeping folks away with the economy and all?

Either way I'm looking forward to visiting the area and the race.

Steve

I don't know if I'd call it my IM training but I'm trying to get in some good base training and start a HIM program for a May HIM....I'm sure the rides with the temps in the 30's will help make the B2B ride feel warmWink
